A powerful explosion destroyed an explosives manufacturing plant in rural Tennessee early Friday morning, leaving at least 19 people missing and feared dead. The blast tore through the Accurate Energetic Systems facility in Humphreys County, reducing it to rubble and scattering debris over a wide area.
“There’s nothing to describe. It’s gone,” said Sheriff Chris Davis, who called it one of the worst disasters he has ever seen. “We’re talking about souls,” he said, explaining that officials are still speaking with families of those missing. Davis personally knew several families affected by the tragedy.
The explosion happened around 7:45 a.m. and sent shockwaves felt more than 15 miles away. Aerial footage showed thick smoke rising from the site, with twisted metal and charred vehicles scattered across the property. The scene, located in the hilly Bucksnort area about 60 miles southwest of Nashville, remained active for much of the day as emergency crews worked to contain the damage.
Families Wait for Answers
By afternoon, anxious families gathered near an undamaged building close to the plant, waiting for any news about their loved ones. The company has not confirmed how many employees were on-site at the time. Accurate Energetic Systems operates an eight-building complex that processes explosives and ammunition for the U.S. military.
Investigators have not yet determined what caused the explosion. Hickman County Advanced EMT David Stewart said emergency crews could not immediately enter the area because smaller detonations continued after the main blast. By late afternoon, officials said the danger had passed, and the site was secure.
Grey Collier, a spokesperson for the Humphreys County Emergency Management Agency, said, “The situation is under control, and no further explosions are expected.”
Company and Officials Respond
Accurate Energetic Systems, based in nearby McEwen, posted a statement online expressing sympathy for the victims. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and community impacted,” the company wrote. “We extend our gratitude to all first responders who continue to work tirelessly under difficult conditions.”
The company holds numerous contracts with the U.S. Army and Navy for various types of explosives, including landmines, C4, and breaching charges.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee shared his condolences on social media, urging residents to “join us in prayer for the families impacted by this tragic incident.” State Representative Jody Barrett said the plant plays a key role in the local economy and feared the loss would deeply affect the community.
Residents miles away said the explosion shook their homes. “I thought the house had collapsed,” said Lobelville resident Gentry Stover. “About 30 seconds later, I realized it had to be the plant.”
A History of Accidents
The U.S. has seen several deadly industrial incidents over the years, prompting the creation of workplace safety laws. In 2019, Accurate Energetic Systems faced minor fines for violations related to hazardous materials and worker safety. Another explosion occurred in 2014 at a nearby ammunition plant, killing one worker and injuring several others.
As investigators comb through the wreckage, the small Tennessee community continues to hope for survivors and mourn those feared lost.
