Jaafar Jackson as Michael Jackson in “Michael.” (Lionsgate)

The first teaser for Michael, the much-anticipated biopic on the King of Pop, has set the internet abuzz — offering a dazzling glimpse into the life, legacy, and rhythm of one of music’s most influential icons.

The minute-long trailer, released Thursday, showcases Michael Jackson’s real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, stepping into his uncle’s legendary shoes with uncanny precision. The 29-year-old son of Jermaine Jackson embodies the pop superstar’s energy, style, and signature moves in scenes that recreate defining moments from his career.

A Family Legacy Reborn

The trailer opens with a voiceover by Kendrick Sampson, who portrays legendary producer Quincy Jones. “The tracks are made. The songs are ready. Let’s take it from the top,” he says — setting the tone for a film that dives deep into Jackson’s world of creativity and reinvention.

In quick flashes, viewers see Jaafar performing the famous Moonwalk, electrifying the stage in the Thriller video, and channeling the showmanship that made his uncle a global phenomenon. The transformation is so striking that many fans have praised Jaafar for capturing not only Michael’s look but also his spirit.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua — best known for Training Day and The EqualizerMichael promises a sweeping cinematic journey. Written by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan, the film traces Jackson’s rise from a gifted child in the Jackson 5 to a visionary artist who redefined pop music.

Celebrating the Star, Avoiding the Shadows

While the trailer dazzles with nostalgia and musical brilliance, it notably avoids any reference to the darker chapters of Jackson’s life. The singer’s highly publicized legal battles and long-standing allegations of misconduct are absent from the preview.Insiders say the film’s production faced delays earlier this year after script complications surrounding the portrayal of the 1993 investigation into abuse allegations. Reportedly, a legal clause restricted dramatization of certain events, forcing filmmakers to rework key scenes after filming had already begun.

Although it remains unclear how — or if — the film will address these sensitive issues, sources suggest the narrative will focus on Jackson’s artistry, family bonds, and creative journey rather than controversy.

Michael Jackson, who died in 2009 at age 50 due to acute propofol intoxication, remains a complex and polarizing figure. His influence on music, dance, and fashion, however, continues to shape generations of performers worldwide.

A Star-Studded Tribute

Fuqua’s film features an impressive ensemble cast. Oscar nominee Colman Domingo plays the Jackson family patriarch, Joe Jackson, while Nia Long takes on the role of matriarch Katherine Jackson. Laura Harrier, Kat Graham, Derek Luke, Larenz Tate, and Miles Teller also join the production in key supporting roles.

According to the filmmakers, Michael will “explore the life beyond the music,” portraying a man driven by ambition and artistic vision. It’s a celebration of an artist whose influence transcended decades, genres, and cultures — and a tribute told through the lens of those who knew him best.

Jaafar’s Uncanny Transformation

Perhaps the biggest revelation of the teaser is Jaafar Jackson himself. His portrayal captures the essence of the King of Pop — from the soft-spoken tone and fluid movements to the unmistakable stage charisma.

The trailer even closes with a light-hearted moment between Jaafar’s Michael and Sampson’s Quincy Jones during a studio session. When Michael asks for the lights to be dimmed, Jones laughs and replies, “Alright, but remember — keep those feet still, my man.”

Coming Soon to Theaters

After years in development, Michael is finally set for worldwide theatrical release on April 24, 2026.

The film’s early visuals promise not just a nostalgic revival but a heartfelt homage to a cultural icon. And with Jaafar Jackson carrying his uncle’s legacy forward, fans can expect a performance that bridges memory, music, and family — bringing the King of Pop’s story back to life, one beat at a time.
