A shooting at Lambton College has left one man dead and two others injured after a student-run event early Friday morning.

Police received reports of gunfire at the campus bar shortly before 1 a.m. Officers rushed to the scene and found three people hurt. One person suffered critical injuries, while two others had less serious wounds.

Victim Identified

Emergency crews took a 20-year-old man from Sarnia to hospital, where doctors later pronounced him dead. Authorities identified him as Dane Nisbet, a name well known in the local hockey community.

The loss has deeply affected friends, family, and those who knew him in the area.

Police Continue Investigation

Investigators have launched a homicide case and continue to gather details about what led to the shooting. Officers remain at the scene and expect to stay there for some time.

“We are not ready to say what the relationship between the potential suspects and the victims are … multiple victims are known to each other. But we will not be commenting at this point what the relationships of the suspects are,” said Deputy Chief Mike Van Sickle.

Police have not confirmed whether the victims attended the college. As of Friday afternoon, no arrests have been made.

College Responds to Tragedy

The college shared a message expressing grief over the incident.

“Lambton College is deeply saddened to share that an individual has died following a shooting early this morning during a Student Administrative Council event on the Sarnia Main Campus. Two other individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

“This loss is a profound tragedy. We extend our deepest condolences to the individual’s family, loved ones, and friends and to everyone affected by this staggering loss. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this senseless act of violence.

“The Sarnia campus remains closed for Friday, April 10. This closure is inclusive of all classes and services at the Main Campus, Fire School, Skilled Trades Training Centre, EarlyON Child and Family Centre, and Community Employment Services. The Ottawa campus is not impacted. We ask our community to please avoid campus.

“Support is being provided to members of the Lambton College community through Counselling and Wellness and the Employee and Family Assistance Plan.

“We continue to work closely with Sarnia Police Service as they investigate. We thank Sarnia Police Service and emergency services for their response. We also thank our Sarnia-Lambton community for their support at this difficult time. We ask that the privacy of our community members and their loved ones be respected.”

Community in Mourning

Officials say the incident did not target the college itself, but the event has shaken the campus community. Leaders have urged people to seek support if they feel affected.

Ontario’s colleges and universities minister, Nolan Quinn, also shared his condolences.

“My thoughts are with the loved ones, the victims, the injured individuals, the entire campus community during this tragic time. Mental health supports are available for anyone who may need them,” he said.

Investigation Ongoing

Police continue to search for answers as they piece together the events of the night. Authorities expect to release more information as the investigation progresses.
