Mark Carney led the Liberal Party to a majority government after strong results in recent federal byelections. The party secured two key victories, giving it enough seats to take clear control in Parliament.
The wins mark a major shift from last year, when the Liberals formed a minority government and relied on support from other parties.
Key Wins in Toronto Ridings
The first breakthrough came in University–Rosedale, Ontario, where Liberal candidate Danielle Martin won the party’s 172nd seat. This result pushed the Liberals past the number needed for a majority.
Shortly after, Doly Begum secured another victory for the party in Scarborough Southwest. Both ridings have long supported Liberal candidates, and the results strengthened the party’s position further.
These wins gave the government more control over decisions in the House of Commons and reduced the need for support from opposition parties.
Shift from Minority to Majority
The Liberals had remained just short of a majority since the last general election, holding 169 seats. Over time, the party gained additional support through members crossing over from other parties.
With the latest byelection results, the Liberals moved beyond the required 172 seats, marking their return to majority status for the first time in years.
This change allows the government to pass laws more easily and avoid the risk of losing confidence votes that could trigger another election.
Opposition Raises Concerns
Opposition leaders reacted quickly to the outcome. Pierre Poilievre criticized how the Liberals reached a majority, pointing to deals made with members from other parties.
“The Carney Liberals did not win a majority government through a general election or today’s by-elections. Instead, it was won through backroom deals with politicians who betrayed the people who voted for them,” he said.
Despite the criticism, the results stand under Canada’s political system.
Liberals Call It a Clear Mandate
Liberal candidates celebrated the victories as a sign of public support. Danielle Martin described the outcome as a strong signal to move forward.
“as of tonight, Mark Carney and our entire incredible Liberal team have earned an even more powerful mandate to continue building a better Canada.”
“This is not a mandate to be quiet. It is not a mandate to take our time. It is a mandate to get to work,” she added.
Doly Begum also welcomed the result, calling it a moment of unity and progress for her community.
Focus Shifts Back to Policy
Following the results, Prime Minister Carney chose not to make a major speech. Instead, he shared messages online welcoming new members of his team.
His office signalled that he plans to return quickly to government work. He has already scheduled announcements aimed at lowering costs for Canadians.
Final Results Still Pending in Quebec
One byelection race in Terrebonne, Quebec, remains under close watch. The riding has seen tight results and legal challenges in the past, including a previous outcome decided by a single vote.
Officials expect a longer counting process due to a large number of candidates and special ballots.
A Narrow but Strong Position
Although the Liberals now hold a majority, their margin remains small. Even so, the results give the government greater stability and control over its agenda.
With stronger numbers in Parliament, Carney now faces growing pressure to deliver on key promises and address concerns raised by Canadians.
