The Canadian government has allocated $2.5 million to enhance an entrepreneurship initiative for Indigenous women and establish a similar program catering to Indigenous youth.

Rechie Valdez, the Minister for Small Business, unveiled the investment in Cape Breton, emphasizing that fostering inclusivity in the economy strengthens its foundation.

The increased funding for the women's program is expected to support up to 2,400 participants in launching and expanding their businesses. Meanwhile, the resources allocated to the youth initiative aim to broaden leadership prospects and facilitate the growth of young entrepreneurs.

Valdez highlighted that Canada boasts over 50,000 Indigenous-owned enterprises, contributing approximately $50 billion to the national economy.

Jaime Battiste, Member of Parliament for Cape Breton, expressed optimism about the programs' potential to foster economic empowerment, foreseeing a beneficial impact extending across Canada.

"Bringing equity-seeking groups into the fold and providing them with a seat at the table are fundamental principles of a fair society and a competitive economy," Battiste remarked.
