ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A new attraction featuring Disney's first Black princess replaces Splash Mountain at U.S. theme parks. Tiana's Bayou Adventure, based on “The Princess and the Frog,” revamps the former ride tied to the racially problematic film “Song of the South.”

Disney introduces Tiana's Bayou Adventure, replacing Splash Mountain, to feature its first Black princess. While praised for representation, critics question its link to past racial stereotypes. Disney aims for inclusivity with theme park updates.

The transformation, announced by Disney in June 2020 amid social justice movements, reflects the company’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural sensitivity. While some view it as a positive step, others question whether it adequately addresses Disney's history of racial stereotyping.

Critics argue that by repurposing Splash Mountain rather than completely overhauling it, Disney inadvertently connects two narratives that skirt racial realities. However, Disney's Imagineers stress their dedication to storytelling that embraces diversity and avoids perpetuating stereotypes.

The overhaul of Splash Mountain is part of Disney’s broader efforts to update attractions with outdated or offensive themes, following similar revisions to rides like Jungle Cruise and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Despite differing opinions, many see the introduction of Tiana's Bayou Adventure as a move toward greater representation and social awareness within Disney's theme parks. As English professor Neal Lester emphasizes, it's possible to prioritize diversity and profitability while fostering an inclusive environment for all visitors.
