Disney CEO Bob Iger

Disney CEO Bob Iger marked a significant milestone on Monday: 50 years since he first joined ABC, now celebrated as "50 Magical Years" at Walt Disney Company.

"Exactly 50 years ago today, I began my journey at ABC, and the landscape of our business has evolved tremendously since then! But at its core, success still boils down to one thing: powerful storytelling. I feel privileged to collaborate with so many talented colleagues who craft extraordinary narratives and experiences for audiences worldwide... truly an adventure of a lifetime!" Iger shared on Instagram.

It's important to note that Iger's association with Disney spans 29 years, not the full 50. He started at ABC as a production assistant in 1974, when it was under the ownership of American Broadcasting-Paramount Theatres, formed after the merger of ABC and Paramount Theatres in 1953.

By 1988, Iger had risen to senior programming executive for ABC's coverage of the Calgary Olympics. At that time, the network was part of Capital Cities/ABC, following Capital Cities' acquisition of ABC in 1986. In the same year, Iger became head of ABC Entertainment, and by 1994, he assumed the role of President and CEO of Capital Cities/ABC.

Disney acquired ABC in 1995, appointing Iger as Chairman of the newly-formed Disney subsidiary ABC, Inc. He further advanced to president of Walt Disney International in 1999 and then to Disney COO in 2000, the company's second-highest position under then-chairman and CEO Michael Eisner. In 2003, amid the "Save Disney" shareholder revolt led by Roy E. Disney and Stanley Gold, Iger emerged as the consensus choice to succeed Eisner, ultimately taking over as CEO in 2005.

While Iger's tenure at Disney officially spans 29 years, his impact on the company has been profound. Notably, his leadership oversaw groundbreaking achievements, beginning with the acquisition of Pixar in 2006, and continuing with remarkable successes until 2019.

Despite the challenges faced by Disney since 2020, Iger's 50th anniversary tribute coincides with the triumph of "Inside Out 2," which recently surpassed $1 billion at the global box office just two weeks after its release.
