The fire blazing at the fish processing facility in Petit-Cap, New Brunswick

July 10, 2024 Tags:

Early Tuesday morning, a devastating fire swept through Elphege & Norbert Le Blanc Ltd., a prominent fish processing plant in Petit-Cap, N.B.

According to Cap-Acadie deputy fire chief Yves LeBlanc, the emergency call initially reported smoke in the vicinity, but upon arrival, firefighters discovered flames engulfing what was initially thought to be a garage, later identified as the fish processing plant.

"We responded to reports of smoke, but upon arrival, it had escalated to a full-blown fire at the commercial facility," stated LeBlanc.

The blaze drew a rapid response, with approximately 45 firefighters from six fire departments converging on the scene by 9:45 a.m. Fortunately, due to the early hour, the building was unoccupied, and no injuries were reported.

Local MLA Jacques Leblanc expressed deep concern over the incident, citing the loss of more than 50 jobs and the alarming frequency of fires in the area.

The fire marshal's office has initiated an investigation to determine the cause, expected to conclude within several weeks.

This tragedy echoes a similar incident in January, when the Aboiteau Wharf Restaurant and fish market in Cap-Pele also succumbed to flames, resulting in a total loss.

Cap-Acadie Mayor Serge Leger voiced frustration over the spate of fires, emphasizing the profound impact on the community and urging swift action.

CEO of the Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce, Anthony Azard, highlighted the plant's significant role in local commerce, noting its export of herring and smoked herring to various international markets.

While authorities assert no direct connection between recent fires, questions persist within the community regarding safety measures and the timing of these incidents.

Public officials and community leaders are actively seeking answers to reassure residents and mitigate further risks.
