In a remarkable auction at Sotheby’s in New York City, a dinosaur skeleton has sold for a staggering $44.6 million, making it the most expensive fossil ever sold. The impressive skeleton belongs to a plant-eating stegosaurus, affectionately named Apex, which stands 11 feet tall and stretches 27 feet from nose to tail. According to Sotheby’s, it ranks among the most complete dinosaur skeletons ever discovered.
The buyer, who wishes to remain anonymous, hinted at plans for the skeleton’s future, stating, “Apex was born in America and is going to stay in America.” This suggests that the skeleton might be loaned to a museum or institution in the U.S., where it can be displayed for the public to enjoy.

Apex was found by a palaeontologist in 2022 near the aptly named town of Dinosaur in Colorado. This serendipitous discovery has led to what some are calling a million-dollar find. Sotheby’s described Apex as "the finest stegosaurus to appear at auction," and its sale on Wednesday not only set a record but also underscored the growing interest in paleontological artifacts.

The auction was highly competitive, with seven bidders participating in the process. Apex exceeded expectations significantly, selling for more than 11 times its pre-sale estimate. After an intense 15 minutes of bidding, the room erupted in applause as the final price was announced.

Jason Cooper, the professional fossil hunter who discovered Apex, chose the name because of its impressive size, suggesting that it would have been a dominant presence in its ecosystem. Scientists believe that Apex roamed the Earth about 150 million years ago during the Late Jurassic Period, a time when dinosaurs thrived.

This sale breaks the previous record for a dinosaur fossil, which was held by a Tyrannosaurus Rex named Stan. Stan sold for $31.8 million in 2020, and Apex’s sale represents a significant leap in the market for fossilized remains.

The auction not only highlights the value placed on paleontological treasures but also reflects the growing fascination with dinosaurs in popular culture. Fossils like Apex draw attention not only for their scientific importance but also for their artistic and historical significance.

The interest in fossils continues to rise, with collectors and institutions alike eager to acquire these pieces of ancient history. Apex's sale is expected to inspire further exploration and discovery within the field of paleontology, as more fossil hunters set out to find their own hidden gems.

The astonishing sale of the Apex skeleton at Sotheby’s has set a new standard in the world of fossil auctions, drawing attention from around the globe. As the dust settles on this historic sale, both enthusiasts and experts are left wondering what the future holds for other remarkable fossils waiting to be unearthed.
