Cowboy’s 2-time Pro Bowler retires on eve of NFL season.

The Dallas Cowboys are preparing for their 2025 NFL season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. But while the team gears up, one of their former stars has decided to step away from the game.

Amari Cooper, a two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver with the Cowboys, has officially announced his retirement. The news comes just days before the season opener, leaving fans surprised by his sudden decision.

Amari Cooper Retires Days After Signing With Raiders

Just nine days ago, Amari Cooper signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. The move marked a reunion with the team that drafted him in 2015. However, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that Cooper is retiring from professional football instead of suiting up this season.

Career Journey: From Alabama Star to NFL Veteran

Cooper entered the league as the No. 4 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft after a standout career at Alabama. He quickly became a reliable target for the Raiders, posting strong numbers in his first four seasons.

Midway through his career, Cooper was traded to the Dallas Cowboys. His arrival gave the franchise a much-needed offensive spark, and he earned two Pro Bowl selections while wearing the star.

Productive Stints in Cleveland and Buffalo

After four seasons in Dallas, Cooper was traded to the Cleveland Browns. His three seasons there included two campaigns with more than 1,000 receiving yards, solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s most consistent pass catchers.

In 2024, the veteran wideout was traded midseason to the Buffalo Bills. He played eight games in Buffalo, recording 20 receptions for 297 yards and two touchdowns. Despite the limited sample, his impact was felt on the field.

Impressive Career Stats and Cowboys Legacy

Amari Cooper closes his NFL career with impressive numbers:

  • 711 receptions
  • 10,033 receiving yards
  • 64 touchdowns

With the Cowboys specifically, Cooper played 56 games, tallying 292 receptions for 3,893 yards and 27 touchdowns. His contributions made him one of Dallas’ most impactful receivers of the past decade.

A Pro Bowl Talent With Lasting Impact

Over the course of his career, Cooper earned five Pro Bowl selections. Two came during his time with Dallas, while others highlighted his consistency across different franchises. His route-running precision and ability to stretch defenses made him a standout receiver in every locker room he joined.

End of an Era

As the Cowboys prepare for another chapter against the Eagles in their season opener, Amari Cooper steps away from the game with a legacy that spans nearly a decade. His career will be remembered for consistency, playmaking, and key contributions to multiple teams.

At just 31, Cooper’s retirement marks the end of a successful run in the NFL and leaves behind memories of clutch performances and a highlight-filled career.
