The U.S. Travel Association has announced the launch of the America’s Sports and Travel Mega Event Coalition (ASTMEC). This group will focus on preparing the country for two major upcoming events — the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Alongside this, the association welcomed the Trump administration’s move to create a White House Task Force dedicated to the 2028 Olympics.

Coalition Goals and Federal Support

ASTMEC brings together leaders from sports, travel, and business to ensure the U.S. is ready for the challenges and opportunities of hosting large-scale events. The coalition plans to work closely with the federal government to create smooth and safe travel experiences for athletes, fans, sponsors, and media.

Key priorities include:

  • Modernizing visa and entry systems through a new Visa Task Force
  • Upgrading airports and improving transport infrastructure
  • Using advanced security technology to ensure safety

The U.S. Travel Association says these events will draw over 30 million international visitors in the next four years, bringing an estimated $100 billion economic boost nationwide.

Calls for Action and Investment

Geoff Freeman, President and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, praised the White House’s proactive planning.

“The Trump administration’s launch of the White House Task Force on the 2028 Summer Olympics lays critical groundwork for a historic decade of global sports,” he said. “Hosting these events will bring global attention and millions of visitors to our cities — but momentum isn’t enough. Success demands strategy, unity and investment.”

Freeman also urged leaders to push Congress to remove what he called a misguided $250 junk fee that could discourage legitimate travelers.

Funding Commitments

Federal support for these events is already in motion. Backed actions include:

  • $625 million in funding for the 2026 FIFA World Cup operations
  • $1 billion for the 2028 Summer Olympics preparations

Freeman emphasized ASTMEC’s readiness to partner with leaders at all levels to ensure that these events leave a lasting legacy. “ASTMEC is ready to deliver a secure, seamless experience and a legacy that lasts,” he said.
