The Vancouver Canucks took a bold step toward reshaping their roster by selecting forward Braeden Cootes with the 15th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. Cootes, the captain of the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds, brings a potent mix of skill, leadership, and scoring prowess to a team hungry for playoff success.

Braeden Cootes: A Proven Leader and Scorer

Braeden Cootes is no stranger to pressure. This season, the 18-year-old winger tallied an impressive 26 goals and 37 assists across 60 games. His ability to generate offense consistently stood out in the highly competitive Western Hockey League.

Standing 5-foot-11 and weighing 183 pounds, Cootes uses his agility and hockey IQ to create scoring chances. Beyond the stat sheet, he wore the “C” proudly for Seattle — a testament to his leadership qualities and work ethic.

Canucks Aim to End Playoff Drought

The Canucks fell short of the postseason last year, finishing 10th in the Western Conference. They missed the playoff cutline by just six points. That narrow miss has clearly motivated the front office to make aggressive moves this offseason.

The draft pick of Cootes signals a forward-looking strategy. He may not crack the NHL lineup immediately, but his trajectory suggests he could become a major contributor in the near future.

Offseason Moves Reflect Win-Now Mentality

Vancouver isn’t waiting around. Just two days before the draft, they acquired gritty forward Evander Kane from the Edmonton Oilers. Kane, known for his physical play and scoring ability, adds veteran experience to the Canucks' locker room.

Meanwhile, winger Brock Boeser’s future remains uncertain. If the Canucks fail to sign him before free agency begins on Tuesday, he will hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent.

What’s Next for Vancouver in the Draft?

Rounds two through seven of the NHL Draft continue on Saturday. Vancouver holds five more picks — one in each round except the fourth. These remaining selections could further bolster their prospect pool, particularly on defense and in goal.

With Cootes leading the class of 2025 for the Canucks, the team is showing clear intent to build a more competitive, balanced roster.

A Promising Future for Cootes and the Canucks

The Canucks’ decision to draft Braeden Cootes reflects their commitment to both present and future success. Cootes not only fills a need for offensive depth but also represents the kind of player you can build around — talented, mature, and hungry to win.

As the 2025 NHL season approaches, all eyes will be on how Cootes develops and how Vancouver integrates its new pieces. The journey back to playoff contention may have just taken a big step forward.
