Winter travel from Canada to the Bahamas keeps rising as new direct flights take off from Halifax and Ottawa. The two routes launched last week and give travellers faster access to the islands during the cold season. Air Canada expects strong interest as more Canadians look south for sunshine.

"We're thrilled to launch non-stop service from Nassau to Ottawa and Halifax, further connecting Canada with one of the Caribbean's most popular destinations," said Alexandre Lefevre, Vice President of Network Planning at Air Canada. "These new routes offer our customers more choice and convenience for winter getaways, while strengthening our commitment to providing direct access to exciting leisure destinations."

The routes respond to growing demand from both regions. Travel from Ottawa to the Bahamas grew 54 percent over the past year. Nova Scotia soared even higher with an 85 percent jump. The new weekly Friday flights now join existing services from Montreal, which run three to four times a week, and Toronto, which see up to seven flights weekly.

Strong Demand From Canadian Travellers

Officials in the Bahamas welcome the extra lift. They say more flights help meet rising interest from Canadian families, couples, and winter travellers seeking warm beaches.

"The Bahamas continues to strengthen its position as a favourite destination for Canadians, and expanding airlift is essential to keeping pace with this growing demand," said the Honourable I. Chester Cooper, Deputy Prime Minister of The Bahamas. "These new flights deepen our connection in Canada and make it even easier for visitors to enjoy the natural beauty, culture, and warm hospitality that define The Islands of The Bahamas."

The growing popularity reflects a wider trend as Canadians seek shorter, stress-free trips to sunny destinations. Direct flights offer smoother travel and attract more visitors planning winter escapes or holiday celebrations.

Holiday Season Heats Up

The islands prepare for a lively holiday season with festive events that mix tradition, culture, and celebration. Travellers arriving over the next few weeks will find plenty of new experiences.

One highlight is Christmas in Downtown Nassau. The city transforms into a bright holiday village with lights, decorations, and a large Christmas tree. Streets fill with local music and seasonal joy, creating an easy and welcoming atmosphere for visitors.

Another major tradition returns with the famous Junkanoo parades on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. These events carry deep cultural roots. They began when enslaved West Africans were allowed three days to honour their heritage. Dancers in colourful, hand-made costumes fill Bay Street while goatskin drums, horns, and cowbells set the rhythm. While Nassau hosts the biggest parades, many other islands hold their own versions, each with impressive displays of creativity and community pride.

For travellers seeking big celebrations, two resorts offer huge year-end parties. Atlantis Paradise Island turns into a neon festival with world-class DJs, celebrity acts, and blazing fireworks. Baha Mar offers a different style with a gala, rooftop events, and a midnight firework show that reflects across the water. Both promise long nights of music, lights, and excitement as the new year begins.

Visitors Gain More Reasons to Travel

With new direct flights and a busy holiday lineup, the Bahamas enters winter with strong momentum. Canadian visitors now have more ways to reach the islands and more reasons to celebrate once they arrive. Local tourism leaders expect the season to stay busy as travellers trade winter storms for warm beaches, lively festivals, and cultural traditions that welcome everyone.
