Canada has issued an updated travel advisory for India, urging travellers to use extra caution following a recent deadly explosion in New Delhi. The new advisory, released on November 11, highlights serious security risks across several Indian cities and warns Canadians to remain alert while travelling in the region.

The government raised the alert after a car explosion near a metro station and the Red Fort, one of India’s most visited landmarks, killed at least 13 people and injured 20 others. The blast took place around 7 p.m. local time on November 10 and is believed to have come from a vehicle stopped at a traffic light.

High Alert in Major Cities

Authorities in India have since placed several states on high alert, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra. In response, the Canadian government is advising its citizens to avoid crowded areas and tourist attractions in those regions. Travellers are also being urged to stay aware of their surroundings, follow the guidance of local authorities, and monitor local news for updates.

The official advisory states, “Exercise a high degree of caution in India due to the threat of terrorist attacks throughout the country. Exercise a high degree of caution in and around Bengaluru, Chandigarh, and Mumbai.”

The warning comes amid growing security concerns and aims to help Canadians make safe and informed travel decisions.

Consular Services Temporarily Limited

The Consulates General of Canada in Bengaluru, Chandigarh, and Mumbai have temporarily paused in-person services because of the heightened security situation. Canadians needing help or information are being directed to contact the High Commission of Canada in New Delhi.

The government also reminds Canadians that consular officials can provide support in emergencies, including medical issues, lost passports, or legal troubles, even if offices are operating remotely.

Travel Safety and Support Programs

Canadian officials regularly review and update travel advisories around the world. These updates often reflect political tensions, crime risks, or security threats that could affect citizens abroad.

The travel advisory system serves as a guide for Canadians planning trips, ensuring they stay informed about potential dangers before and during travel.

To receive timely information, Canadians abroad can register for the Registration of Canadians Abroad (ROCA) program. This free and confidential service sends alerts in the event of emergencies, whether abroad or back home, helping travellers stay connected with Canadian officials and their families.

Canadians Urged to Stay Vigilant

As security conditions in India evolve, travellers are encouraged to check for updates before and during their trip. Officials stress the importance of avoiding demonstrations or large gatherings, which can become unpredictable. They also suggest carrying identification at all times and keeping emergency contacts easily accessible.

While India remains a popular destination for Canadian tourists and business travellers, current conditions require extra care and awareness.
