Canada has updated its travel advisory, warning citizens about rising instability worldwide. Paraguay now joins China, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Turkey, Oman, and India on the list. The government cites growing crime, political unrest, and regional conflicts as reasons for heightened caution.

The advisory urges Canadians to stay informed, be alert, and take precautions to protect themselves. Officials note that local security measures may sometimes lack consistency or reliability, making personal vigilance essential.

Paraguay – Watch Your Belongings

Paraguay has seen more petty crime recently, including pickpocketing, purse snatching, and ATM robberies. Criminals often follow travelers withdrawing cash. Urban areas like Asunción, Chacarita, Fernando de la Mora, and San Lorenzo report the highest crime rates.

Safety Tips: Keep valuables secure, avoid carrying large sums of cash, and do not show signs of wealth. Avoid walking alone after dark and comply if confronted. Never leave belongings visible in vehicles. Women traveling alone should stay alert and avoid isolated areas.

Adventure seekers must plan carefully in remote areas like the Chaco wilderness, hiring guides and having insurance covering emergencies.

China – Strict Laws and Scams

China presents legal challenges for visitors, with strict enforcement and limited consular support. Financial crimes, even minor, can carry severe penalties. Exit bans may prevent travelers from leaving if involved in investigations.

Petty crime like pickpocketing is common, especially in crowded tourist areas. Counterfeit currency and fraud are also widespread. Women should remain vigilant against harassment and scams, particularly in popular sites like Beijing and Shanghai.

Qatar – Regional Tensions

Qatar’s security situation can change quickly due to regional conflicts. Crime is low but travelers should watch for credit card fraud and secure personal documents. Harassment against women can occur, and protests may disrupt public areas.

Sri Lanka – Demonstrations and Safety Concerns

Protests in Sri Lanka, especially in Colombo, can turn violent. Terrorism and violent crime remain risks, with tourists sometimes targeted. Women should exercise caution, particularly when alone. Avoid accepting drinks or food from strangers and steer clear of poorly lit areas.

Brazil – Urban Crime Warnings

Brazil faces high urban crime, especially in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Recife. Armed robbery, sexual assault, and petty theft are concerns. Travelers should stay alert, secure belongings, and avoid walking alone after dark. Some border regions are particularly risky due to smuggling and drug trafficking.

Turkey and Oman – Regional Conflicts

Turkey has volatile security conditions, particularly in southeastern provinces. Terrorist attacks are rare but possible in crowded areas. Petty theft is common in tourist spots.

Oman is generally safe but areas near the Yemeni border are risky. Travelers should remain cautious around demonstrations and public spaces.

India – Regional Instability

Certain regions of India, including Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and Manipur, face security challenges. Terrorism, civil unrest, and petty crime are concerns. Women travelers should take extra precautions. Avoid crowds and report incidents to local authorities immediately.
