A Canadian man has appeared in court in Kenya after authorities charged him in connection with a violent incident at a mosque in Nairobi. The 32-year-old entered a plea of not guilty to several terrorism-related charges during a court hearing on Thursday.

Investigators have linked him to an attack that left several people injured earlier this year.

Details of the Incident

According to Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the incident took place in February. Officials say the man entered the mosque while pretending to be a worshipper.

Once inside, he locked the main doors and then pulled out a machete. Authorities allege that he attacked people who had gathered there for prayer.

Five individuals suffered injuries during the incident. Emergency services rushed them to hospital, where they received treatment.

Arrest and Evidence

Police moved quickly after the attack and took the suspect into custody. Officers also recovered the weapon believed to have been used during the assault.

Investigators have continued to gather evidence as the case moves through the legal system.

Charges Filed

Prosecutors have laid nine charges against the accused. These include terrorism-related offences and assault causing bodily harm.

Officials have treated the case seriously due to the nature of the attack and the location where it took place.

Custody and Next Steps

Authorities have placed the accused in Kamiti Maximum Security Prison as the case continues. He will remain there until his next court appearance later this month.

The court will review a pre-bail report before making any decisions about his release.

Ongoing Investigation

Officials have not shared further details about the motive behind the attack. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The case has drawn attention due to the involvement of a Canadian citizen and the seriousness of the charges.

Community Impact

The attack has raised concerns about safety in places of worship. Community members and officials continue to call for calm while the legal process unfolds.

Authorities in Kenya say they will continue to handle the case with care as they move forward with prosecution.
