Despite facing economic pressures, Canadians are actively planning summer trips, according to a recent survey. The study, conducted by Deloitte Canada, indicates that Canadians are allocating an average of $2,405 for transportation and lodging expenses during their summer travels. This finding suggests that despite financial constraints, Canadians are prioritizing leisure and travel experiences.

The survey, titled Deloitte Canada's Summer Travel Outlook, highlights a prevailing trend among Canadians to explore domestic destinations. A significant majority, accounting for 74% of respondents, express a preference for staying within Canada for their summer vacations. Leslie Peterson, a representative from Deloitte Canada, emphasizes the potential growth in the travel sector, even amidst consumer concerns about pricing. Peterson notes that Canadians are eager to discover local attractions, ranging from serene lakeside retreats to vibrant urban adventures.

This sentiment is echoed by individuals like Jessie Mancini, a self-employed hairstylist, who is opting for camping excursions with her family instead of more extravagant vacation options. Mancini's decision reflects a common theme among Canadians to adapt their travel plans to suit their financial circumstances while still prioritizing enjoyable experiences. She shares her positive experiences of camping at Mal's Camping in Lanark, located just 45 minutes from her home. Mancini highlights the joy of witnessing her children's laughter and the sense of relaxation that accompanies weekend camping trips.

Camping remains a popular choice among Canadians, particularly for short getaways and day trips. Jennifer Sloan, founder of Unexpected Journeys, offers an innovative approach to exploring the Ottawa region and beyond. Sloan's venture has gained significant traction, with over 3,000 groups availing themselves of the Unexpected Journey package. Priced at $60 per package, the offering provides travelers with curated self-guided journeys that encompass various attractions, including quaint cafes, bustling towns, and Indigenous landmarks. Sloan emphasizes the flexibility of the journeys, allowing travelers to customize their itineraries based on personal preferences. Additionally, each package includes a list of recommended accommodations, enabling travelers to extend their journeys into overnight stays if desired.

Supporting locally-owned establishments is another priority for Canadian travelers. Kelly's Landing in Manotick, situated along the Rideau River, exemplifies this trend. Manager Vicky highlights the restaurant's scenic riverfront location, attracting boaters from neighboring regions. As summer approaches, Kelly's Landing anticipates an influx of visitors, including houseboats from locations like Smiths Falls and Peterborough, as well as Quebec boat traffic.

Overall, the survey results underscore Canadians' resilience and determination to prioritize travel experiences despite economic challenges. From camping adventures to exploring local attractions, Canadians are finding creative ways to enjoy summer vacations while supporting local businesses and communities.
