A video showing what appears to be a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer shouting at a Canadian driver has raised concerns and is now under investigation. The short clip, lasting 39 seconds, was shared on social media and shows a tense moment between the officer and the tourist.

What Happened on Highway I90

The video was recorded inside a vehicle heading south on highway I90 in New York State. The spot is close to the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, which connects Queenston, Ontario, and Lewiston, New York.

In the footage, a man wearing a CBP badge on his sleeve leans out of a grey pickup truck driving beside the camera. The officer yells repeatedly, “Never come to the U.S. again!”

The captions in the video explain that the driver honked at the pickup, which has Ontario license plates, and then was followed closely for about two miles. The captions also point out that the officer appeared to notice the camera, became “shy,” and sped off without using a turn signal.

Response from U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Officials from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency have responded to the video. Mike Niezgoda, a spokesperson for the agency, said, “CBP stresses honor and integrity in every aspect of our mission.” He added, “Officers and agents work hard every day to keep our country safe. We expect all employees to act with the highest standards of professionalism and conduct.”

CBP confirmed it is reviewing the incident but did not share details due to privacy laws. The agency said it takes all complaints seriously and tries to be transparent about investigations through its yearly reports. The most recent report available is from the 2023 fiscal year.

What This Means for Cross-Border Travel

This incident highlights ongoing tensions and challenges at the U.S.-Canada border. Many Canadians regularly travel to the U.S. for work, tourism, or family visits. Moments like this can raise fears or concerns about how travelers are treated.

The video has sparked conversations online about border officer behaviour and respect for visitors. While the situation seems isolated, it reminds officials to maintain professionalism when interacting with the public.

Looking Ahead

The CBP investigation will seek to understand what happened and whether the officer’s actions broke any rules. Until then, the agency says it remains committed to fair treatment of everyone crossing the border.
