The Montreal Canadiens may be preparing for another big move as they continue reshaping their roster. After acquiring defenseman Noah Dobson from the New York Islanders, the team is now reportedly eyeing veteran center Evgeny Kuznetsov.

The Russian star, who spent last season in the KHL, is looking to make a return to the NHL — and Montreal could be the perfect fit.

Kuznetsov Targets NHL Return

Evgeny Kuznetsov, once a key figure for the Washington Capitals, is now exploring a comeback after a year overseas.

According to RG Media, the skilled forward is evaluating offers from nearly 10 NHL teams. Among the interested parties? The Montreal Canadiens.

Sportswriter Marco D’Amico of RG confirmed the Canadiens’ interest, stating, “We’ve received word that the Montreal Canadiens are indeed one of those teams.” This report follows earlier speculation about Kuznetsov’s desire to return to North America.

Chemistry Could Be Key

Kuznetsov’s recent stint in the KHL saw him play for SKA St. Petersburg, where he shared the ice with Canadiens’ rising prospect Ivan Demidov. That connection could prove valuable if Montreal secures Kuznetsov.

Demidov has already arrived in Montreal following the end of his season in Russia. A familiar presence like Kuznetsov alongside him could help ease the transition into full-time NHL play. That chemistry might give the Canadiens a boost down the middle, a position where they’ve lacked depth.

Experience and Skill Make Kuznetsov a Strong Fit

At 33, Kuznetsov still has plenty to offer. His track record includes a Stanley Cup championship with the Washington Capitals in 2018, where he led all players in postseason scoring with 32 points in 24 games.

Over his 743-game NHL career, Kuznetsov has tallied 173 goals and 402 assists. That’s 575 points of production the Canadiens could certainly use, especially from the center position.

Montreal's youthful roster could benefit from Kuznetsov’s leadership and winning experience.

Waiting on a Decision

Kuznetsov’s camp is reportedly weighing multiple offers, focusing not just on money but also on fit. A source close to the player said he is seeking a strong, competitive team — and the Canadiens’ young, hungry core may be exactly what he's looking for.

“The camp is mulling over offers,” D’Amico noted. “They want the best possible fit on a winning roster.”

Montreal Makes Sense

There’s plenty of reason why the Canadiens would pursue Evgeny Kuznetsov. He checks the boxes: center depth, elite vision, powerplay upside, and playoff experience. Pairing him with a familiar face like Demidov might also accelerate both players' impact.

Montreal’s front office has already made moves to elevate the team. Adding Kuznetsov could be the next smart step. With his NHL comeback looming, all eyes are now on where the Russian veteran lands — and Montreal is firmly in the mix.
