Authorities in Florida have charged a 16-year-old boy in connection with the death of his 18-year-old stepsister, Anna Kepner, during a cruise last November. Officials confirmed that the case involves charges of murder and aggravated sexual abuse.
The incident took place aboard the Carnival Horizon while the family travelled together. Investigators say the situation unfolded shortly before the ship returned to Florida.
Details Emerge After Court Decision
Officials first filed charges earlier this year, but new details came to light after a court order lifted restrictions on the case. A federal judge ruled that the teenager would face prosecution as an adult, allowing more information to become public.
The court formally indicted the accused in March. Until recently, much of the case remained sealed due to his age.
Victim Found Inside Cabin
Investigators discovered Anna Kepner’s body hidden under a bed in a shared cabin. She had been staying in the room with two other teenagers, including the accused.
Medical reports later confirmed that she died from mechanical asphyxia, a condition where breathing stops due to force or pressure.
The discovery shocked both passengers and crew, bringing immediate attention to the case.
Family Responds to Tragedy
Anna Kepner’s father, Christopher Kepner, spoke about the family’s grief and their hope for justice.
“trust in the justice system to pursue the truth with care and integrity”.
“At the same time, we are deeply troubled that, despite the seriousness of the charges, he has not been taken into custody,” he added. “The situation is deeply painful and complex for the entire family.”
The family continues to deal with the loss while following developments in the case closely.
Legal Process Continues
The teenager has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Since his arrest, he has lived under supervision with a relative instead of remaining in custody.
A judge ordered him to wear an electronic monitoring device. The court later allowed limited movement under supervision.
Prosecutors have raised concerns about public safety and have asked the court to review the decision that allowed his release.
One prosecutor stated, “He committed these crimes against a victim with whom he had no apparent relational strife, and whom he was being raised to view as a sibling.”
Community Remembers Victim
Anna Kepner was known as a high school cheerleader in her community. Friends and family remembered her as bright and full of life.
During her memorial service, loved ones chose to celebrate her personality by wearing colourful clothing instead of black.
The tribute reflected how those close to her wanted to honour her memory.
Ongoing Case Draws Attention
Cases involving teenagers in federal court remain rare, which has added further attention to this situation. The legal process now moves forward as both sides prepare their arguments.
Officials say they will continue to review the case carefully as it proceeds through the court system.
