In a bold offseason move, the Philadelphia Flyers have acquired star centre Trevor Zegras from the Anaheim Ducks. The deal was confirmed by Flyers General Manager Daniel Briere, marking a significant addition to the team’s roster ahead of the 2025 NHL Draft.

The trade sees the Flyers sending forward Ryan Poehling, the 45th overall pick in 2025, and a 2026 fourth-round pick to Anaheim in exchange for the skilled 24-year-old centerman.

Zegras Brings Firepower and Flair to Philly

Trevor Zegras, a 2019 first-round pick (ninth overall), has built a strong reputation over five seasons with the Ducks. Known for his creativity, speed, and on-ice vision, Zegras adds instant offensive depth to the Flyers lineup.

He has played 268 career NHL games, tallying 67 goals and 119 assists for a total of 186 points. His breakout years came in 2021-22 and 2022-23, posting back-to-back 60+ point seasons. Zegras led Anaheim in scoring during the 2022-23 season with 65 points, including 23 goals and multiple game-winners.

A Strong But Underrated 2024-25 Season

Though injuries and line up changes may have affected his output, Zegras still made an impact in the 2024-25 campaign. In just 57 games, he scored 12 goals and recorded 32 points. He maintained a solid 0.56 point-per-game average, ranking fifth best on the team.

While the numbers dipped from his earlier seasons, his potential remains high. The Flyers are betting on a bounce-back performance in orange and black.

A Decorated Prospect with Proven Pedigree

Before becoming an NHL regular, Zegras showcased his offensive talent at every level. In 2020-21, he played with the San Diego Gulls in the AHL, notching 10 goals and 21 points in just 17 games.

He also starred at Boston University during the 2019-20 season, where he recorded 36 points in 33 games, averaging more than a point per outing.

International Stage Success

Zegras has also shined internationally, donning the USA jersey on multiple occasions. Most recently, he competed in the 2024 IIHF World Championships, contributing a goal and an assist in eight games.

His most memorable performance came at the 2021 World Junior Championships, where he powered the U.S. to gold. Zegras scored seven goals and 18 points in seven games, earning him the tournament MVP title.

What This Means for the Flyers' Future

With this acquisition, the Flyers are clearly focused on a rebuild that leans into young, dynamic talent. Zegras, at only 24, fits perfectly into that vision. His arrival also signals the franchise’s desire to be more competitive in the short term while maintaining a solid prospect pool.

As for their draft arsenal, Philadelphia now holds 10 total picks in 2025, with six in the first two rounds:

Round 1: Picks 6, 22, 31

Round 2: Picks 36, 40, 48

Round 3: Pick 68

Round 5: Picks 132, 157

Round 6: Pick 164

This blend of youth and skill gives the Flyers flexibility to further develop or make additional trades.

A New Chapter Begins in Philadelphia

Trevor Zegras arrives in Philadelphia with high expectations and plenty of upside. Known for his flashy play making and creativity, Zegras could become a franchise centrepiece for the Flyers in the years ahead.

This trade marks not just a roster shift, but a clear commitment to building a high-energy, offensively potent team. Flyers fans have every reason to be excited — the Zegras era has officially begun in Philly.
