Yanni Gourde has officially extended his stay with the Tampa Bay Lightning by signing a six-year contract. The 33-year-old forward agreed to a $13.98 million deal, which averages out to $2.33 million per year. This new contract ends any speculation about his future, as he was heading toward unrestricted free agency on July 1.

A Key Player Returns to Tampa Bay

Gourde’s return to Tampa Bay came through a three-team trade on March 5, involving the Seattle Kraken and Detroit Red Wings. After joining the Lightning mid-season, he made an immediate impact. In 21 games with Tampa Bay last season, Gourde notched 14 points, including one goal and 13 assists.

Before the trade, he played 36 games with the Kraken, contributing to his total of 31 points last season. His performance helped the Lightning secure a playoff spot, though the team fell short, losing in the first round to the Florida Panthers.

Gourde’s Excitement About Staying

Expressing his happiness, Gourde said, “I’m extremely happy to continue with the Lightning. The term of the contract was a big factor for me.” He emphasized the team’s winning culture and the desire to keep building on it.

“The Lightning has always been about winning, and that’s what we want to keep doing. Wearing this jersey means pride, and the ultimate goal remains to win the championship,” he added.

From Undrafted to Stanley Cup Champion

Yanni Gourde’s journey with the Lightning began in 2014 when he was signed as an undrafted free agent. Since then, he has played 602 regular-season games with both Tampa Bay and Seattle, scoring 347 points (133 goals and 214 assists). In playoffs, he has tallied 43 points in 88 games.

His efforts contributed to Tampa Bay winning back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021. These victories hold a special place in Gourde’s heart and have strengthened his bond with the team.

What Makes Tampa Bay Special for Gourde?

Reflecting on his return, Gourde highlighted the team’s strong locker room and commitment to excellence. “When I came back, I saw the same dedication and talent that helped us win before. The culture here remains strong.”

He described the Lightning’s environment as welcoming and motivating, saying, “Everyone welcomed me with open arms. It’s so fun to be part of this group.”

Despite the recent early playoff exit, Gourde believes the team is still a strong contender. “It was disappointing to go out in the first round, but this group is really good. I believe in our potential to win again.”

A Home Away From Home

Gourde also spoke fondly of Tampa and Florida. “We love Tampa, and we love living in Florida,” he said. This connection to the city and the team makes his long-term commitment even more meaningful.

Looking Ahead: Championship Goals Remain

With this new contract, Gourde is set to be a key player for the Lightning over the next six years. The team and the forward share a clear vision: to bring home more Stanley Cup titles.

As Gourde put it, “We want to win every year. The goal is always the championship. We’re ready to keep building and pushing forward.”
