Indiana Fever’s playoff push took a hit Tuesday night. The Fever dropped to the eighth seed in the WNBA standings after a tough 85-79 loss to the Phoenix Mercury at PHX Arena.

The defeat left Indiana at 21-20, holding the league’s final playoff spot. With just three regular season games left, every possession now matters for the Fever.

Kelsey Mitchell Ignites Early Momentum

Kelsey Mitchell gave the Fever a strong start in Phoenix. The guard poured in 15 points during the opening quarter, almost single-handedly keeping Indiana in the contest.

Mitchell went 5-of-6 from the field and nailed three triples in the first 10 minutes. Her hot shooting carried Indiana to 23 first-quarter points, with Lexie Hull and Natasha Howard adding four each.

Despite Mitchell’s scoring burst, Phoenix clung to a slim lead after the opening frame.

Phoenix’s Second-Quarter Surge Breaks the Game

The Fever were battling back-and-forth with the Mercury until a costly lapse late in the second quarter.

Aliyah Boston scored with just under three minutes left, cutting Phoenix’s lead to three, 39-36. That would be Indiana’s last field goal of the half.

The Mercury responded with a crushing 12-3 run. Indiana’s defense struggled, forcing coach Stephanie White to burn a timeout. The only Fever points came from Lexie Hull’s free throws.

By halftime, the Fever’s deficit had ballooned to 15. That swing ultimately became the difference in the game.

Caitlin Clark and DeWanna Bonner Exchange Words

The night also brought drama between two stars. Caitlin Clark and DeWanna Bonner had a heated exchange during a third-quarter timeout.

Bonner, who began the season with Indiana before parting ways after nine games, faced her former team for the third time. Fans at Gainbridge Fieldhouse had already booed her heavily during July’s matchup.

Tensions boiled over when Lexie Hull was called for a foul the Fever contested. As Bonner walked toward her bench, Clark appeared to say something and gestured toward her. Bonner stopped, turned back, and exchanged words with Clark before a referee stepped in.

Fans booed loudly, and Clark continued waving toward the Mercury bench. The Fever challenged the call, but the review did not go in their favor.

Bonner went on to score 19 points, playing a pivotal role in Phoenix’s victory.

Fever’s Playoff Path Gets Tighter

The loss stings for Indiana. At 21-20, the Fever hold the eighth and final playoff seed. With three games left, they cannot afford more slip-ups.

Kelsey Mitchell’s scoring, Caitlin Clark’s leadership, and Aliyah Boston’s inside presence will be crucial in the stretch run. But defensive lapses and late-game droughts remain hurdles.

The Fever will need a stronger all-around effort if they want to secure their postseason spot.
