John Tavares reached a major career milestone on Wednesday but could not lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to victory. The Maple Leafs fell 6-3 to the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena, despite Tavares scoring his 500th NHL goal.
Tavares netted the milestone goal at 15:45 of the third period, making the score 6-2. He reflected afterward, “You play this game to win as a team. You’d like to have it make more of an impact, but I’ll appreciate it more in the days ahead.”
Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews praised Tavares, calling him an exceptional teammate and professional. “It’s amazing to play with Johnny. He works hard every day and takes care of himself in every way,” Matthews said.
Blue Jackets’ Offensive Surge
Columbus dominated early, fueled by standout performances from Cole Sillinger and Mathieu Olivier. Sillinger scored his first two goals of the season and added an assist. Olivier set a career-high with four points, tallying one goal and three assists. Charlie Coyle also had a career-best four assists.
Zach Werenski contributed a goal and an assist, while goalie Elvis Merzlikins made 33 saves. The Blue Jackets (6-4-0) extended their winning streak to three games and five of their last six.
Olivier highlighted the team’s strategy, saying, “We roll four lines heavily. That’s a recipe for success.” Sillinger added, “When the cycle works, we’re tough to knock off the puck. If teams give us space, we capitalize.”
Maple Leafs Struggle to Keep Up
Toronto (5-5-1) had won two straight before Wednesday’s game. Sammy Blais and Nicholas Robertson each scored a goal and assisted once. Cayden Primeau made 18 saves in goal.
Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube noted, “If you don’t take care of the puck and read teams’ tendencies, you can get burnt. That’s what happened tonight.”
Both teams entered Wednesday after 4-3 wins on Tuesday—Columbus in overtime over Buffalo and Toronto against Calgary.
Early Goals Set the Tone
Columbus struck first with Sillinger at 6:56 of the opening period, assisted by Coyle, who notched his 300th career assist. Werenski extended the lead to 2-0 at 11:16.
Toronto’s Blais cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second period, batted in a shot from Jake McCabe. It was Blais’ first game for the Maple Leafs after being claimed off waivers from Montreal.
Ivan Provorov made it 3-1 at 8:33, converting a Dmitri Voronkov rebound. Sillinger added his second goal at 13:24, followed by Fabbro’s strike at 16:58 to make it 5-1.
Coyle, Olivier, and Sillinger combined for 11 points, highlighting the depth of Columbus’ attack. Olivier scored again at 7:50 of the third period, marking his first goal of the season. Tavares’ milestone goal came later, and Robertson scored the final goal at 18:10 for Toronto.
Milestone and Records
Tavares became the 49th player in NHL history to reach 500 goals and only the second to do so with the Maple Leafs, joining Mats Sundin. He is currently on a six-game point streak with nine points.
Coyle’s four primary assists made him the third player in Blue Jackets history to achieve the feat in a game. Blais scored his first NHL goal since October 2023. Meanwhile, Maple Leafs forward Steven Lorentz left the game after a hit from Jake Christiansen, with no postgame update.
This game highlighted the contrast between individual milestones and team success. While John Tavares celebrated a personal achievement, Columbus showcased a cohesive attack to secure a convincing win.
