After years of “revenge travel” and packed itineraries, a new travel trend is taking shape. It’s called the “Joy of Missing Out,” or JOMO, and it’s changing how people plan their getaways. Instead of rushing through tourist spots and checking social media every hour, more travellers now prefer slow, peaceful trips focused on rest and self-care.

A recent survey by YouGov for Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) found that over 70% of travellers are turning away from the “Fear of Missing Out” mindset. They now seek calm, meaningful experiences that let them recharge and enjoy time for themselves.

From FOMO to JOMO

The report shows a clear shift in attitudes. In the past, 71% of travellers tried to see as many attractions as possible on each trip. But 35% said they came home more tired than before they left. Now, 77% plan slower, more relaxing vacations, choosing quality over quantity.

Instead of busy sightseeing, people are embracing a quieter pace. They value moments of rest, flexibility, and freedom from pressure. Many say JOMO travel helps them reconnect with themselves and enjoy simple pleasures.

A New Form of Self-Care

For 67% of respondents, JOMO-style travel feels like an act of self-care. They see it as a chance to unplug, step away from daily routines, and spend time in nature. Many also value the ability to do things spontaneously rather than follow strict schedules.

Travellers say what matters most in this kind of trip is freedom from obligations (52%), time outdoors (48%), and the ability to move at their own pace (39%).

Cruises Offer the Perfect Setting

More than half of those surveyed (54%) believe cruises are ideal for JOMO vacations. They offer a relaxing environment where guests can rest, enjoy the sea, and explore without rushing.

The Caribbean stood out as the top destination for JOMO travel. Its calm beaches, warm weather, and natural beauty make it the perfect place to unwind.

NCL plans to have 18 ships sailing to the Caribbean through 2027, including the new Norwegian Luna™ and Norwegian Aqua™, departing from ports such as Miami, New York, Punta Cana, and San Juan.

NCL’s Approach to Relaxed Cruising

Harry Sommer, president and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd., said, “The Joy of Missing Out travel is about choosing what matters most, and at NCL, we make that easy.”

NCL’s cruises let guests design their own pace. Travellers can sleep in, relax at the Mandara Spa, or simply stay onboard to enjoy quiet time. The company’s **private islands—Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas and Harvest Caye in Belize—**offer peaceful beaches, crystal waters, and private lounges for ultimate relaxation.

Guests also enjoy all-inclusive perks, including open bars, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, and shore excursion credits. This simple approach removes planning stress, giving guests the chance to fully unwind and focus on the moment.

The Joy of Slowing Down

As more people seek balance in their lives, JOMO travel continues to grow. It’s not about doing nothing—it’s about doing what feels right. Whether that means watching the sunset at sea or enjoying a quiet morning coffee, travellers now value peace over pressure and joy over hurry.
