Ipswich striker Liam Delap has a £30m release clause

Chelsea are on the verge of signing Ipswich Town’s striker Liam Delap after activating his £30 million release clause.

The 22-year-old forward has emerged as one of the hottest prospects in English football after a standout Premier League season. Despite Ipswich’s relegation, Delap’s individual form caught the attention of multiple top-tier clubs.

Premier League Giants Battled for Delap

Delap was not short of suitors. Manchester United, Everton, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest all expressed serious interest. Manchester City, his former club, also retained a buy-back clause, keeping tabs on their academy graduate.

However, Chelsea have moved swiftly, triggering his release clause and taking the lead in the race. Delap has reportedly made it clear that Stamford Bridge is his preferred destination.

Chelsea's UCL Return Lures Delap

One major factor attracting Delap is Chelsea’s qualification for the Champions League. The Blues secured their return to Europe's elite competition just last week.

They also added silverware to their cabinet by winning the UEFA Conference League in Wroclaw on Wednesday night.

For Delap, this presents an opportunity to feature again on the Champions League stage. He made a solitary appearance in the competition for Manchester City in 2022.

Ipswich Confirm Delap’s Exit Talks

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna confirmed Delap has been granted permission to explore his future options.

“Liam's looking at his options for next year, which I think he is entitled to do and we support him with that,” McKenna stated ahead of their final Premier League game.

Delap joined Ipswich last summer in a deal worth up to £20 million from Manchester City. In his debut season, he netted 12 goals in 32 Premier League starts.

Chelsea Plan for the Future

While Chelsea work on finalising personal terms with Delap, Ipswich are eyeing a replacement. The East Anglian club are interested in signing Chelsea’s young Spanish forward Marc Guiu on loan.

Guiu, 19, has shown flashes of brilliance, scoring six goals in 14 appearances for Chelsea this season. However, his progress was halted by a muscular injury that sidelined him for much of 2025.

He made his return as a late substitute in the Conference League final and is expected to be fit for pre-season. A loan move to Ipswich could provide him with regular game time and vital experience.

Chelsea’s Ambition Shines Through

Chelsea’s push for Delap signals intent. The club is focusing on securing young, high-potential talents to build a strong, dynamic squad.

Delap’s arrival would add depth and pace to their attacking line, with the potential to become a long-term asset.

Should negotiations conclude smoothly, the transfer could be completed swiftly, giving Delap a full pre-season with his new teammates.

With Champions League football on offer and a promising squad being assembled, Chelsea continue to shape a bright future — and Liam Delap could be at the heart of it.
