U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia says she will resign from Congress in January. Greene shared the news in a ten-minute video posted Friday, saying she “always been despised in Washington, D.C., and just never fit in.”

Her decision comes after a very public split with former president Donald Trump, a man she once strongly defended. Greene built her political career around Trump’s support, starting with her first campaign in 2020. She often stood by him during key battles and became one of the most visible figures in his movement.

Rift With Trump Grows

Their relationship changed in recent months. Greene criticized Trump over his position on files linked to Jeffrey Epstein. She also challenged him on foreign policy and health-care issues. Trump fired back, calling her a “traitor” and “wacky.” He even vowed to support someone running against her in the next election.

Greene said she found these attacks unfair. In her video, she stressed that she supported Trump more often than she disagreed with him. She argued that elected officials must vote for what they believe is best for their districts. “Loyalty should be a two-way street,” she said. She added that representatives should feel free to vote their conscience without punishment.

A Polarizing Political Figure

Greene quickly became one of the most controversial members of Congress after she entered politics. She made headlines for comments linked to the QAnon conspiracy theory and appeared at events with white supremacists. Many Republican leaders distanced themselves from her, while Trump embraced her early on. He once called her “a real WINNER!”

Despite her reputation, Greene built strong ties within the party. She supported Kevin McCarthy and gained influence on the right side of the Republican caucus. She held that role until McCarthy lost the Speaker’s chair in 2023.

Her sharp rhetoric and combative style brought both attention and criticism. Supporters saw her as a bold voice who refused to compromise. Opponents saw her as reckless and divisive. Either way, she remained a major figure in national politics until her relationship with Trump fell apart.

What Comes Next

Greene did not share details about her future plans. She did suggest she will stay active in politics in some form. She also insisted that she remains committed to the people in her district.

Her departure will create a vacancy in Georgia’s political landscape. It may also shift dynamics inside the Republican Party, where loyalty to Trump remains a major factor.

Greene’s exit marks the end of a short but turbulent chapter in Congress. Her rise, influence, and sudden break with Trump underline how quickly alliances can change in American politics.
