Over 260,000 backyard pools sold in Canada are being recalled. Health Canada took this step after nine children drowned in similar pools in the U.S. A design flaw lets kids climb the outer strap and reach the water without help, which makes the pools unsafe. More than 5 million above-ground swimming pools are being recalled due to safety concerns. Over 260,000 of these were sold in Canada. Health officials raised alarms after several young children drowned in the U.S. These tragic incidents led to a major recall involving three well-known pool brands.

Why the Recall Happened

The pools have a strap that runs around the outside, known as a compression strap. This strap can act like a step for small children. If a child climbs it without adult supervision, they might fall into the pool and drown.

This design flaw has led to nine reported child drownings in the U.S. from 2007 to 2022. The children who died were between 22 months and three years old.

Brands and Models Involved

The recalled pools were made by Bestway, Intex Recreation, and Polygroup. These pools have been sold since 2002 and include models as recent as 2025.

They were available online and in-store at big-name retailers. These include Walmart, Amazon, Costco, Target, and Lowe’s.

All recalled pools are 48 inches (122 cm) or taller. If you own a pool like this, check the brand and model name to see if it’s affected.

Health Canada and U.S. Officials Speak Out

Both Health Canada and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission have asked families to stop using the pools until they’re fixed.

So far, Canada hasn’t reported any injuries or deaths. But the danger is still very real. That’s why the recall is being taken seriously in both countries.

What Pool Owners Should Do Now

If you own one of the recalled pools, don’t wait. Contact the company that made your pool — Bestway, Intex, or Polygroup. They will send you a free repair kit.

This kit includes a rope to replace the unsafe strap. Until the fix is done, make sure kids cannot get near the pool without an adult. You can also drain the pool if needed for safety.

A Reminder About Water Safety

This recall is part of a bigger push to keep kids safe near water. Drownings happen fast and quietly, often within seconds.

In places like Quebec, recent drownings have caused new warnings from officials. Water safety experts ask parents to always stay alert when children are near pools, rivers, or beaches.

Safety Comes First

These recalled pools show how even small design details can create big risks. With the right steps — like repairs and supervision — many accidents can be avoided. Families are urged to act fast and keep safety first.
