As anticipation builds for the upcoming ninth edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, it's worth revisiting some of the most thrilling last-ball run chases from previous tournaments. Scheduled to take place in the West Indies and the USA starting June 1st, this year's tournament will feature a record 20 teams vying for the coveted trophy.

One of the most unforgettable moments occurred in 2009 when the Netherlands shocked England in a remarkable display of resilience. Despite England's strong start with notable performances from Ravi Bopara and Luke Wright, experienced campaigner Ryan ten Doeschate turned the tide with crucial wickets. Despite a challenging chase, the Dutch held their nerve, thanks in part to Tom de Grooth's steady innings. With just two runs needed off the final ball, an overthrow from Stuart Broad sealed a historic victory for the Netherlands at Lord’s.

In 2010, Sri Lanka and India clashed in a nail-biting encounter that went down to the wire. After Gautam Gambhir and Suresh Raina set a competitive target for Sri Lanka, the Indian bowlers faced a tough challenge from Lasith Malinga. However, a determined Sri Lankan side, led by Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara, stayed in contention. With the match hanging in the balance, Chamara Kapugedera's explosive innings culminated in a last-ball six, securing victory for Sri Lanka in dramatic fashion.

Another thrilling last-ball chase unfolded in 2014 when Ireland edged past Zimbabwe in a tense group stage encounter. Despite Brendan Taylor's valiant efforts, Ireland's openers, William Porterfield and Paul Stirling, laid a solid foundation for the chase. Tinashe Panyangara's late surge with the ball added to the drama, but Ireland held their nerve to clinch victory with three wickets in hand.

Zimbabwe found redemption later in the same tournament when they overcame the Netherlands in a similar fashion. After a disciplined bowling performance restricted the Dutch, Zimbabwe faced a challenging chase. However, contributions from Hamilton Masakadza and Brendan Taylor kept them in the hunt. With one run needed off the final ball, Vusi Sibanda delivered a decisive blow, sealing victory with a six.

In 2022, India and Pakistan renewed their historic rivalry in a high-stakes encounter. Despite early setbacks, Pakistan managed to set a competitive target, thanks to Shan Masood and Iftikhar Ahmed's steady partnership. In response, India faced a daunting task, but Virat Kohli's masterclass, supported by Hardik Pandya's resilience, kept them in contention. With 13 runs needed off the final three balls, the odds seemed stacked against India. However, a pivotal no-ball from Mohammad Nawaz turned the tide, allowing Kohli to strike a crucial six. In a nerve-wracking finale, Ravichandran Ashwin held his nerve to secure victory for India on the final ball.

These memorable last-ball victories epitomize the excitement and drama that define the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, showcasing the resilience and determination of teams in the face of adversity. As the tournament approaches, fans eagerly await more unforgettable moments on cricket's grandest stage.
