The New York Islanders have sparked major buzz across the NHL as trade talks involving star defenseman Noah Dobson pick up momentum. According to insider Chris Johnston of The Athletic, the Islanders are in active discussions with multiple teams—most notably the Montreal Canadiens and the St. Louis Blues—regarding the 25-year-old restricted free agent.

Islanders Weigh Options as Dobson Talks Stall

Noah Dobson, once viewed as a long-term cornerstone for the Islanders, may now be on the move. After six seasons with New York, the skilled blueliner is drawing serious interest from playoff-hungry teams.

Though New York initially explored a contract extension with Dobson, talks have yet to yield a deal. Islanders GM Mathieu Darche confirmed discussions were ongoing with Dobson’s agents but admitted negotiations have been slow.

“I’ve been talking with the agents. It’s all part of the process,” Darche said. “It’s been a very cordial negotiation. We’re working through it.”

Dobson’s Rising Value Sparks Trade Interest

Dobson finished the 2024-25 season with 10 goals and 29 assists in 71 games. While his recent numbers are solid, they come just a year after his breakout 70-point campaign in 2023-24. That season saw him finish eighth in Norris Trophy voting, firmly placing him among the league's elite defensemen.

His offensive upside and defensive consistency make him a valuable asset for teams looking to push deeper in the playoffs—especially the Canadiens and the Blues, who both bowed out in the first round in 2025.

Canadiens Could Use Dobson’s Firepower

For the Montreal Canadiens, landing a player like Dobson could dramatically shift their blue-line dynamic. Despite a strong core of young players, Montreal’s defense has lacked elite puck-moving talent. Dobson’s offensive instincts and ability to quarterback the power play could fill that void.

Adding Dobson to their roster would not only provide an immediate boost but also signal that Montreal is ready to accelerate its rebuild and aim for deeper postseason runs.

Blues Aiming to Rebound After Playoff Exit

The St. Louis Blues are another team in the mix. After a disappointing early playoff exit, St. Louis is hungry to reinforce its defensive corps. Dobson, with his ability to transition play and contribute offensively, fits the profile of a modern NHL defenseman the Blues are lacking.

His addition could complement veteran leadership on the back end and bring much-needed speed and creativity to St. Louis’s game plan.

Salary and Contract Status a Key Factor

Dobson’s current contract—signed in 2022—carries a $4 million cap hit and expires at the end of the 2024-25 season. As a restricted free agent, his future salary demands are a central issue in the trade talks.

Teams pursuing him must weigh not only the assets required to acquire him but also the cost of locking him down long-term.

The Islanders, meanwhile, need to decide whether they’re willing to meet those contract expectations—or cash in now while his trade value remains high.

What Comes Next for Noah Dobson and the Islanders?

As negotiations continue, the Noah Dobson trade rumors are only gaining traction. Whether he remains with the Islanders or starts a new chapter with the Canadiens or Blues, one thing is clear:
Dobson’s next move could reshape the future of more than one franchise.

For now, fans across the league will be watching closely as this high-stakes trade drama unfolds.
