Quinn Hughes traded to Minnesota Wild for Rossi, Buium, prospect and pick in 2026

The Vancouver Canucks made a franchise-altering decision Friday by trading Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild. The blockbuster move signals a clear shift toward a long-term rebuild in Vancouver.

Hughes, the 2023–24 Norris Trophy winner, leaves as one of the most accomplished defensemen in team history. In return, Vancouver secured young talent and future draft capital to reshape its roster.

Canucks Receive Youth and Draft Capital

The Canucks acquired Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, Zeev Buium, and a 2026 first-round NHL Draft pick. Management views the package as a foundation for the next competitive core.

President of hockey operations Jim Rutherford praised Hughes while emphasizing the organization’s future-focused approach. He described the incoming players as central to Vancouver’s rebuilding blueprint.

Quinn Hughes: End of an Era in Vancouver

Quinn Hughes departs after eight seasons with the Canucks. The team selected him seventh overall in the 2018 NHL Draft. He later became captain and the franchise’s offensive anchor from the blue line.

Hughes remains under contract through the 2026–27 season, carrying a $7.85 million cap hit. He would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency afterward.

Norris Trophy Season Defined His Peak

Hughes earned the Norris Trophy in 2023–24 after a dominant season. He recorded 92 points, including 17 goals and 75 assists.

He followed that performance as a finalist again last season. Hughes also earned a spot on the United States roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

In 459 career games, he posted 432 points, the most ever by a Canucks defenseman. He also added 26 playoff points in 30 postseason games.

Trade Reflects Vancouver’s Direction

General manager Patrik Allvin admitted the decision was difficult but necessary. He cited ongoing discussions about Hughes’ long-term future with the franchise.

Vancouver struggled after its 2023–24 division title. The team missed the playoffs in 2024–25 and fell again this season. Coaching changes and roster turnover followed.

The Canucks currently sit 11-17-3, well outside the Western Conference playoff picture.

Rossi Brings Immediate NHL Impact

Marco Rossi, 24, arrives as a proven NHL contributor. He was Minnesota’s ninth overall pick in 2020.

Rossi has 114 points in 202 NHL games. He signed a three-year, $15 million deal in 2025. His offensive consistency adds stability to Vancouver’s forward group.

Buium Highlights the Defensive Future

Zeev Buium, 20, is considered a high-upside defense prospect. Minnesota drafted him 12th overall in 2024.

He won a national championship at the University of Denver and appeared in the NHL playoffs shortly after. Vancouver believes he can eventually run a power play.

Ohgren Adds Depth and Upside

Liam Ohgren, 21, brings size and development potential. Drafted 19th overall in 2022, he remains early in his NHL career.

Though his production has slowed this season, Vancouver values his long-term growth curve.

Wild Strengthen Contender Status

For Minnesota, the Hughes trade accelerates a push toward contention. The Wild sit third in the Central Division and have surged recently.

Since late October, Minnesota has gone 14-3-2, transforming its season. Hughes immediately upgrades their blue line and transition game.

A Defining Trade for Both Teams

The Quinn Hughes trade reshapes futures on both sides. Vancouver gains flexibility and youth. Minnesota acquires an elite defenseman in his prime.

The deal marks a bold reset for the Canucks. It also announces the Wild as serious contenders moving forward.
