Sean McVay takes blame for overtime fourth-down vs. 49ers: 'Bad call by me'

The Los Angeles Rams suffered a heart-wrenching 26-23 overtime loss to the San Francisco 49ers in a pivotal NFC West clash at SoFi Stadium.

The Rams' offense was impressive in the second half, moving the ball effectively through the air and on the ground. Quarterback and receivers connected for nearly 400 passing yards, while running back Kyren Williams rushed for 65 yards on 13 carries. Despite these strong numbers, a single critical decision decided the game's outcome.

Fourth-and-1 Play Decides the Game

With the game tied in overtime, the Rams faced a fourth-and-1. Head coach Sean McVay opted for a run to the right, giving the ball to Williams. Unfortunately, the 49ers defense held firm, stopping the play and sealing the win for San Francisco.

In the post-game press conference, McVay admitted the decision was his responsibility. "Bad call by me," he said. "I thought about maybe trying to draw them offsides. I took one timeout, they took the other, and it was a poor decision by me right there."

McVay’s transparency highlights the weight of coaching decisions in high-stakes moments. He acknowledged feeling “sick” about putting his team in a difficult situation at the end of the game.

Field Goal Option Ignored

When asked whether a field goal attempt had been considered on that drive, McVay quickly dismissed the idea. Kicking would have tied the game with about five minutes left in overtime.

"In hindsight, I wish I would've," McVay admitted. "We came in here to try to win the football game. The play selection was very poor, and I'm sick because I put our players in a tough spot."

The candid reflection shows McVay's commitment to accountability, even in moments of disappointment.

Lessons Ahead for the Rams

McVay also noted that while the loss stings, it presents an opportunity for growth. "We did more to lose that game than to win it," he said. "But this will offer an opportunity for us to continue to show that we're made of the right stuff."

The Rams will look to regroup quickly as they prepare for their Week 6 road matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. McVay emphasized that the team must learn from this setback and move forward stronger.

Fans See Both Sides of the Season

Despite the loss, the Rams showcased moments of brilliance. Kyren Williams’ rushing and the team’s nearly 400 passing yards demonstrate the potential for explosive play. The question remains whether adjustments in critical situations can turn close games into victories.

Meanwhile, the 2025 NFL season continues to deliver exciting moments across the league. For instance, Week 1 highlighted Detroit Lions wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa’s impressive touchdown catch against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, a play initially ruled incomplete but later overturned. Despite TeSlaa’s effort, the Packers prevailed 27-13.

Moving Forward

For the Rams, the focus shifts to improvement and preparation. McVay and his coaching staff will need to refine decision-making on crucial downs and ensure the team maximizes its offensive and defensive strengths.

The NFC West race remains tight, and every decision can tip the balance. McVay’s openness about the mistake signals a willingness to adapt—a trait that may define the Rams’ season in the coming weeks.
