The 2025 Leagues Cup final ended in drama as Seattle Sounders secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Inter Miami. In front of a record-breaking home crowd, Seattle added another major title to its growing collection, while Lionel Messi and Miami failed to deliver on the big stage.

Seattle Sounders Strike Early

The Sounders set the tone from the start. In the 26th minute, Osaze De Rosario found the net with a powerful header. Alex Roldan delivered a perfect cross, and De Rosario rose high to bury the ball past Miami’s goalkeeper. The early goal electrified the 69,314 fans inside Lumen Field, most of whom came hoping to witness history.

Messi Misfires as Miami Struggle

Despite boasting Lionel Messi in attack, Inter Miami looked frustrated for most of the night. The team created chances after the break, but Messi and his teammates missed crucial opportunities. Seattle’s defense stood tall, keeping the Argentine legend and his strike partners quiet. The pressure was on, but Miami couldn’t convert.

Penalty Kick Doubles the Lead

In the 84th minute, Seattle extended their advantage. Georgi Minoungou earned a penalty after being brought down in the box. Captain Alex Roldan stepped up and slotted home with confidence. The stadium erupted, sensing that the trophy was within reach.

Rothrock Seals the Victory

The celebrations began five minutes later. Substitute Paul Rothrock latched onto a pass and calmly slotted in Seattle’s third goal in the 89th minute. The strike confirmed the Sounders’ dominance and sealed their status as Leagues Cup champions.

Luis Suárez Sparks Ugly Clash

The final whistle should have signaled celebrations, but chaos soon followed. Luis Suárez, visibly angry with the result, confronted Seattle’s young midfielder Obed Vargas. The veteran striker put the 20-year-old in a headlock, igniting a heated scuffle. Players from both sides rushed in, and tensions quickly boiled over.

Witnesses claim Suárez even spat at a Sounders security guard during the incident, further souring Miami’s night. It took several minutes for officials to calm the situation before the trophy presentation could proceed.

Seattle Makes History

Once order was restored, the Sounders lifted the 2025 Leagues Cup trophy to thunderous applause. The victory made Seattle the first Major League Soccer team to win every major North American title — two MLS Cups, four U.S. Open Cups, the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League, and now the Leagues Cup.

Record Crowd Adds to the Occasion

The final also marked a historic night for attendance at Lumen Field. The crowd of 69,314 was the largest for a Sounders match since their 2022 Champions League triumph. Fans created a lively, unforgettable atmosphere, blending Seattle’s traditional green with splashes of Miami pink. Many Inter Miami supporters, drawn by Messi’s presence, added to the spectacle.

Sounders’ Legacy Continues to Grow

Seattle’s loyal fan base once again proved its strength. Although average attendance dipped after the pandemic, the Sounders still ranked third in MLS last season with around 30,000 fans per game. Sunday night’s packed house showed the city’s enduring passion for the sport.

In the end, Seattle outshined Messi, Miami, and the drama. The Sounders celebrated yet another milestone, cementing their reputation as one of Major League Soccer’s most successful and consistent clubs.
