Houston Texans waive RB Dameon Pierce

November 21, 2025 Tags:

The Houston Texans made a surprising roster move on Thursday, waiving running back Dameon Pierce just hours before their Week 12 NFL showdown against the Buffalo Bills. The decision reflects the team’s evolving running back strategy and the competitive nature of roster spots in the NFL.

Pierce’s Early Promise

Drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft from Florida, Dameon Pierce made an immediate impact as a rookie. He led the Texans in rushing that season, compiling 939 yards and showing potential as a powerful, between-the-tackles runner.

At the time, Pierce was seen as a cornerstone for the team’s rushing attack. Fans expected him to grow into a consistent offensive threat in Houston.

Changes in Role

The 2023 season brought significant challenges for Pierce. The arrival of veteran Devin Singletary shifted the running back hierarchy, relegating Pierce to a backup role. Even after Singletary left via free agency, the Texans continued to acquire high-profile backs, limiting Pierce’s opportunities.

In 2025, he found himself third on the depth chart, behind rookie sensation Woody Marks and marquee signing Nick Chubb. Pierce managed just 10 carries for 26 yards and one touchdown this season, highlighting his reduced role in Houston’s offense.

Texans’ Roster Moves

Waiving Pierce signals a clear focus on the Texans’ current top backs. Nick Chubb, when healthy, and Woody Marks, the explosive rookie, are now the team’s primary rushing options. Veteran and practice-squad players like British Brooks may see more opportunities if injuries arise.

General Manager and coaching staff view the move as part of strategic roster management, ensuring the team maximizes talent in key positions ahead of playoff contention goals.

Pierce’s Future

At 25 years old, Pierce still has considerable upside. His physical running style makes him an attractive option for teams in need of a proven power back. Any team claiming him off waivers would assume the remainder of his rookie contract, which could make him a cost-effective addition.

Analysts suggest multiple franchises may consider adding Pierce to bolster their depth, particularly those seeking a back capable of handling short-yardage and goal-line situations.

What This Means for Texans

For the Texans, this move is a reminder of the ruthless nature of NFL roster decisions. Even a former fourth-round pick with early success can find himself sidelined due to team strategy, acquisitions, and competition for limited roles.

As Houston prepares to face the Buffalo Bills Thursday night, their running back room will rely heavily on Chubb and Marks. Backup options will need to step up if injuries occur, testing the depth of the roster.

The decision to part ways with Pierce underscores the high-stakes, performance-driven culture of professional football, where potential alone is rarely enough to secure a spot.
