Brazil reached a major tourism milestone this year, welcoming nine million international visitors before the year ended. The figure marks the highest number of foreign arrivals the country has ever recorded. It clearly surpasses the previous record of 6.77 million visitors set in 2024 and also beats the national target of 6.9 million outlined in the country’s tourism plan for 2024 to 2027.
Tourism officials describe the achievement as a sign of growing global interest in Brazil. The steady rise in visitor numbers shows how travel demand continues to rebound and strengthen.
Tourism Brings Strong Economic Gains
International visitors played a key role in boosting Brazil’s economy. From January to November, foreign tourists spent about $7.17 billion across the country, based on figures from the Central Bank. This amount represents an increase of more than eight percent compared to the same period last year.
The spending total already comes close to the full-year figure recorded in 2024, which reached $7.3 billion. Tourism businesses across Brazil benefited from higher demand, including hotels, restaurants, transport services, and local attractions.
Image Shift and Targeted Promotion
Tourism leaders credit the strong performance to successful efforts to refresh Brazil’s image overseas and focus on key travel markets. Marcelo Freixo, president of the national tourism promotion agency, said the results reflect years of planning and outreach.
“This is a historic figure that generates jobs, income, and development across all regions of the country, reinforcing tourism as one of the major drivers of our economy,” Freixo said.
Officials say the renewed focus helped position Brazil as a welcoming and attractive destination for international travellers.
Neighbouring Countries Lead Visitor Numbers
Argentina stood out as Brazil’s top source of international tourists this year. Between January and November, about 3.1 million visitors arrived from Argentina, marking an increase of more than 80 percent compared to the same period last year.
Chile ranked second, sending more than 721,000 visitors, while the United States placed third with nearly 678,000 travellers. Visitor numbers from the U.S. also rose compared to 2024, showing steady growth from North America.
São Paulo Remains the Main Entry Point
São Paulo continued to serve as Brazil’s main gateway for international travel. The state welcomed nearly 2.5 million foreign visitors during the first eleven months of the year. Rio de Janeiro followed closely with almost two million arrivals.
Southern states also recorded strong numbers. Rio Grande do Sul received more than 1.4 million visitors, while Paraná and Santa Catarina each attracted hundreds of thousands of international tourists. These figures highlight how travel demand spreads across different regions of the country.
More Growth Expected Ahead
Tourism officials expect the upward trend to continue into the summer of 2026. Strong ticket sales for flights to Rio de Janeiro and the expansion of international routes at Galeão International Airport support this outlook. Authorities believe improved air access will help maintain Brazil’s momentum as a global travel destination.
