Authorities confirmed that 10 people died, including a suspect, following a shooting in Tumbler Ridge, a small town in northern B.C. The victims included several people found at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, the site of the incident.

Active Shooter Reported

Mounties first received the call about an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School at around 1:20 p.m. local time. As police rushed to the scene, their main goal was to locate and stop the threat. Upon entering the school, officers discovered multiple victims. The suspect, believed to be the shooter, was found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury.

Victims Found Inside the School

In total, six victims were discovered inside the school. One more died from injuries while being taken to the hospital. Police reported that two individuals were airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries. Thankfully, all remaining students and staff were safely evacuated, and the RCMP worked with the school district to help reunite families with their loved ones.

Further Victims Discovered at a Nearby Home

In addition to the victims at the school, two more were found dead inside a home that police believe is connected to the incident. Officers continue to search nearby homes and properties to determine if anyone else was harmed during the tragedy.

Shelter-In-Place Alert Lifted

As part of the response to the shooting, local residents were issued an emergency alert urging them to shelter in place. This alert was lifted at 5:45 p.m. Police reassured the public that there appeared to be no ongoing threat, and there were no other suspects involved.

Community Reels from the Loss

Supt. Ken Floyd, Commander of the B.C. RCMP’s North District, expressed his condolences in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident,” he said. “This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community, and we are grateful for the cooperation shown as officers continue their work to advance the investigation."

A Small Community in Shock

Tumbler Ridge, located in northeastern B.C.'s Peace River region, is a small community with a population of around 2,400 people. The secondary school involved in the shooting has roughly 160 students. Due to the tragedy, both the local elementary and secondary schools will remain closed for the rest of the week, as confirmed by School District 59.
