Pope Francis surprised everyone on Sunday by appearing at St. Peter’s Square. He had just come home from the hospital after five weeks of treatment. Many people in the crowd cheered when they saw him.
The 88-year-old Pope came out in a wheelchair. He had an oxygen tube under his nose. He smiled and waved at the people. “Hello to everybody,” he said. “Happy Sunday to all of you, thank you very much.”
He had left the hospital in Rome on March 23. On that day, he gave a short blessing from his window. His doctors had advised him to rest for at least two months after leaving the hospital.
The Vatican shared an update on Friday. They said the Pope’s health had gotten better. He was in good spirits and had restarted some of his daily work.
Doctors admitted him to the hospital on February 14. He had a serious infection that caused double pneumonia. One of his doctors later said his condition was very serious. The Pope faced two dangerous moments during his stay. His life was at risk both times.
The good news is that his breathing and movement have improved a little. He also has a better voice now, according to reports on Friday. His blood tests show his lung infection is getting better too.
Even though he is still receiving oxygen, he needs less of it now. During the day, he uses a small amount. At night, doctors give him more oxygen through a tube if needed.
The Pope has faced health problems for most of his life. When he was 21, doctors removed part of one of his lungs. That makes him more likely to get infections, especially in his lungs.
Despite his health problems, Pope Francis has kept working. He continues to meet with people and lead the Church. His recent public appearance gave hope to many followers.
The Pope is originally from Argentina. He has now served as the head of the Roman Catholic Church for 12 years.
Many people were happy to see him again. His short greeting and kind words brought smiles to the crowd. The Vatican has not said when he will return to his regular schedule fully. But his Sunday visit shows that he is slowly getting stronger.
His surprise appearance gave comfort to many around the world. It was a sign that he is recovering and staying strong.
