Costco set to enforce new rule starting September 1. USA Today

Costco’s exclusive shopping hours for executive members are officially being introduced across all U.S. warehouses. The new schedule takes effect following the Labor Day weekend, giving premium members an extra hour to shop before the crowds arrive.

The decision follows months of preparation. In a June 11 email, Costco informed members that its stores would begin opening at 9 a.m. exclusively for executive members, one hour before standard access. Business outlet reports confirmed warehouses were given a grace period to adapt, which ended August 31.

Extended Access for Premium Shoppers

The early access program allows executive members to enjoy quieter aisles and shorter checkout lines during the first hour of the day. From Monday through Friday, stores will open from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. exclusively for executive members. On Saturdays, the window will run from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., while Sundays will also offer a full hour of early entry.

This move marks a significant step in Costco’s effort to increase the value of its top-tier membership. The company has not yet commented on how many customers are expected to take advantage of the new schedule.

Weekend Hours Extended for Everyone

In addition to the executive member benefit, Costco has also expanded shopping time for all members. Beginning July 5, stores now close at 7 p.m. on Saturdays, one hour later than before. The extended weekend hours aim to ease customer flow and accommodate growing demand.

Benefits of Executive Membership

Executive membership already comes with several perks beyond warehouse access. Members receive all the privileges of Gold Star membership, including entry to Costco fuel stations and a complimentary household card.

A key feature is the annual 2% reward on qualified purchases, which can amount to significant savings for frequent shoppers. Executive members also enjoy exclusive discounts on Costco services, from travel packages to insurance offerings.

In its June email, the company added another incentive. Executive members now receive a monthly $10 credit for orders of $150 or more placed through Costco’s Same-Day service or via Instacart. The credit is expected to encourage more use of Costco’s delivery options, which have grown increasingly popular.

A Competitive Membership Landscape

Costco’s changes come as membership-based retailers look to strengthen customer loyalty. The new hours could prove attractive to busy professionals and families who value quieter shopping times and flexible schedules. By offering additional convenience, Costco is reinforcing the value of upgrading to executive membership, which costs more than the standard Gold Star option.

While the company has not yet issued an official statement confirming the end of the grace period, multiple reports indicate the changes are now in effect nationwide.

For members seeking less crowded shopping, the early access hours could become a valuable advantage. With the added benefits of rewards, credits, and extended weekend availability, Costco is positioning executive membership as more rewarding than ever.
