A woman has died, and a man is recovering after a shooting in downtown Hamilton on Friday afternoon. The incident happened just before 5:30 p.m. near Jackson Square on King Street West, between MacNab and James streets.

Two Victims Found at the Scene

When officers arrived, they found two people hurt by gunfire. A woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while a man was rushed to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Duty Inspector Greg Doerr confirmed the details, saying police are still working to gather more information.

Suspect Fled on Foot

The shooter ran away after the attack, last seen heading north on James Street. So far, police have not arrested anyone.

When asked if the shooting targeted anyone, Doerr said, “We have no information to suggest that at the time.”

He added that the shooting happened in front of a city bus, though it is still unclear if the victims had just gotten off the bus.

Mall Evacuated, Streets Closed

Following the shooting, officers shut down parts of the area and evacuated the mall as a safety measure. Police also told nearby businesses to go into hold-and-secure mode in case the suspect ran inside.

Emergency Response teams and patrol officers searched the mall and confirmed it was safe.

“We made sure there was no threat inside,” said Doerr.

Witnesses Urged to Come Forward

Hamilton police said the investigation is still in its early stages. They also acknowledged how events like this affect the community deeply.

“This senseless act of violence in a very busy area on a Friday afternoon is very troubling,” said Doerr. “The community can be assured that we’re using all our resources to find who did this.”

Social media posts from bystanders showed heavy police presence, flashing lights, and emergency crews at the scene.

Police Continue Their Search

Officers expect to stay in the area for hours as they collect evidence and review any videos.

Investigators are asking people who were around between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. and saw anything or recorded footage to come forward.

Anyone with information can call 905-546-4167 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
