Iran-linked hackers breach FBI Director Kash Patel’s email
A hacking group with ties to Iran has claimed it broke into the personal email account of Kash Patel and shared private material online. The group, known as Handala, posted a message on Friday along with several images and documents it said came from the account.
The group released photographs that appear to show Patel in personal settings, including one where he stands beside a vintage sports car and another where he holds a cigar. It also shared files such as a résumé and older records linked to travel and business activity.
“Kash Patel, the current head of the FBI, who once saw his name displayed with pride on the agency’s headquarters, will now find his name among the list of successfully hacked victims,” the group said in its message.
FBI responds to the incident
The Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed that it is aware of the situation and has taken steps to limit any possible risk. Officials said the material involved appears to be old and does not include sensitive government information.
“The FBI is aware of malicious actors targeting Director Patel’s personal email information, and we have taken all necessary steps to mitigate potential risks associated with this activity,” the agency said. “The information in question is historical in nature and involves no government information.”
Authorities did not directly name those behind the breach but acknowledged ongoing concerns about cyber threats linked to groups connected to Iran.
Reward offered for information
Officials have offered a reward of up to 10 million U.S. dollars for information that could help identify members of the hacking group. Authorities say the group has targeted U.S. officials in the past.
The exact timing of the breach remains unclear. However, earlier reports from late 2024 indicated that Patel had already been warned about a possible attempt to access his personal account before he became FBI director.
Growing concerns over cyber attacks
The group behind the claim has carried out several cyber attacks in recent months. It has openly supported causes linked to Iran and Palestine and has said its actions respond to political and military events.
Earlier this month, the same group claimed responsibility for disrupting systems at a medical technology company based in Michigan. It said the attack came as a response to events involving Iran.
Security experts have pointed to such groups as part of a wider network that carries out cyber operations connected to state interests. These attacks often target individuals, companies, and government figures.
Focus on personal data security
This latest incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of personal data, even for high-profile figures. Officials continue to monitor the situation while urging stronger protection against cyber threats.
