Residents in Ottawa can expect a gentle start to fall this year, but forecasters warn the shift to winter may happen quickly.

Warm Start to Fall

The Weather Network released its fall forecast this week. It shows above-average temperatures across eastern Ontario, including Ottawa, Toronto, and London. Sunshine will be more frequent, while storm systems will stay below usual levels through October.

“For the heart of the fall season, from mid-September through October, warmer-than-normal temperatures are forecast to dominate across the province, including London, Toronto, and Ottawa,” the Weather Network said.

Forecasters also said that October should bring brighter skies and fewer fall storms compared with past years.

November May Bring Surprises

The forecast highlights a change in November. While warm days may linger, meteorologists are monitoring signs of a faster-than-usual shift to early winter.

“Mild temperatures are expected to persist into November, but we are closely watching the potential for a more abrupt transition into early winter,” the Weather Network said.

This warning suggests residents should prepare for sudden drops in temperature and the possibility of snow arriving earlier than expected.

Outlook from Environment Canada

Environment Canada also released its three-month forecast. It predicts above-seasonal temperatures and near-normal precipitation across much of the country, including Ottawa. This aligns with the Weather Network’s call for a mild start but does not rule out sharper changes later in the season.

Drier Than Normal Summer

The summer in Ottawa was drier than usual. The city recorded four straight months with less rain than normal. August saw only 48.2 millimetres of rainfall, well below the typical 85 millimetres. That made it the driest August in Ottawa since 2002.

The dry trend has raised concerns for soil moisture heading into the fall, though upcoming rains may help balance conditions before winter sets in.

What Residents Should Expect

For now, Ottawa can look forward to a warm September and October with clear skies. But forecasters advise residents not to pack away their winter gear too early. November may deliver a sudden change, and temperatures could fall quickly.

With both national and regional forecasts pointing to warmth followed by a possible sharp turn, Ottawa’s fall will be pleasant but unpredictable.
