Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has said he is ready to team up with the Liberal government to solve the ongoing trade conflict with the United States. This comes as Parliament prepares to start its spring session on Monday.

Preparing for Spring Session

Poilievre met with his party’s MPs on Sunday. Although he won’t be in the House of Commons yet, he spoke for almost 15 minutes about what the Conservatives plan to focus on in the coming months. Media was allowed to hear his opening remarks.

He stressed that the party must work hard for the Canadians who voted for them in the last election. His list of priorities mostly repeats promises he made during the campaign.

Putting Canadians First

Poilievre made it clear that his party aims to bring real change to the government. But he also emphasized the need to solve the trade dispute with the U.S. quickly.

He said the Conservatives have told Prime Minister Mark Carney that they will “cooperate” with the Liberals in any way to end this problem.

Not Yet in the House

Even though the Conservatives won 144 seats in the recent election, Poilievre did not win his own seat. Because of this, former leader Andrew Scheer will represent the party in the House of Commons until Poilievre wins a seat in a future byelection.

This arrangement means Poilievre will lead his party from outside the House for now, but he remains focused on pushing their agenda forward.

Focus on Solutions

The trade dispute with the United States has created problems for many Canadian businesses. Both parties seem ready to find a way to fix the issue. Poilievre’s promise to work with the Liberals shows a focus on results over politics.

By joining forces, the two parties hope to protect jobs and improve trade relations with Canada’s biggest trading partner.
