Prime Minister Mark Carney met with His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V during his first official visit to Canada, which runs from March 25 to 31. The meeting marked an important step in strengthening long-standing ties between Canada and the Ismaili Imamat.
A Warm Welcome and Strong Partnership
Prime Minister Carney welcomed His Highness and praised his leadership and global contributions. Both leaders highlighted the close relationship between Canada and the Ismaili community, which includes around 120,000 members across the country. Their contributions have played a key role in building strong social and economic connections.
The meeting built on this historic partnership, as both sides agreed to expand cooperation in areas that benefit Canadians and support global development.
New Push for Affordable Housing
Housing took centre stage during the discussions. The Prime Minister welcomed new investments from the Ismaili Imamat aimed at building not-for-profit, multi-generational housing across Canada. These projects aim to increase the supply of affordable homes for families.
In addition, the federal government plans to work closely with the Ismaili Imamat through Build Canada Homes. This long-term partnership will focus on creating housing projects designed for low- and middle-income Canadians, helping ease pressure in the housing market.
Expanding Global Economic Efforts
The leaders also announced the launch of an Economic Partnership Platform. This new initiative will bring together public and private funding to support development projects in Africa and Asia.
FinDev Canada and the Aga Khan Fund will work together under this platform. They will invest in key sectors such as infrastructure, renewable energy, and agriculture. These efforts aim to support economic growth in regions that remain important to Canada’s international relationships.
Focus on Education and Skills
Looking ahead, both leaders asked officials to explore new ways to work together in education and skills training. Canada plans to share its expertise in workforce development to help partner countries strengthen their talent and job opportunities.
This move reflects Canada’s interest in supporting long-term growth through knowledge and training.
Concerns Over Middle East Tensions
During the meeting, the leaders discussed the ongoing situation in the Middle East. They stressed the importance of avoiding further conflict in the region.
His Highness the Aga Khan pointed to the impact of rising tensions on civilians, including members of the Ismaili community. Both sides agreed that stability and peace remain essential.
New Diplomatic Appointment
Prime Minister Carney also announced that the Honourable David Lametti will serve as Canada’s new Representative to the Ismaili Imamat. In his role as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations, Lametti will help strengthen this growing partnership.
Continued Cooperation Ahead
Both leaders agreed to stay in close contact and continue building on their shared goals. The visit signals a renewed commitment to cooperation, both within Canada and on the global stage.
