A tragic chain of events unfolded Sunday in Lexington, Kentucky, leaving two women dead and several others hurt after a gunman opened fire at a church following a traffic stop incident. The violence began near the city’s airport and ended with the suspect being shot and killed by police.

Traffic Stop Turns Deadly

The situation started when a state trooper pulled over a vehicle after receiving a license plate alert around 11:30 a.m. The driver, who police believe was the suspect, shot the trooper and then fled the scene. Authorities later confirmed the trooper is in stable condition.

Church Becomes the Next Target

After escaping, the gunman carjacked another vehicle and drove to Richmond Road Baptist Church, about 16 miles away. There, he entered the building and started shooting.

A 72-year-old woman and a 32-year-old woman died from gunshot wounds. Two more people were also injured during the shooting. One of them is in critical condition, while the other is recovering in stable condition at a local hospital.

Suspect Killed at the Scene

Police quickly arrived at the church. During the confrontation, officers shot the suspect, who died on the spot. Authorities have not yet shared his name, as they are still notifying his family.

Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers stated that early evidence suggests the shooter may have known the victims inside the church, though this is still under investigation.

Community and Officials React

The church, described as a small and close community, was shaken by the attack. Coroner Gary Ginn confirmed the victims were part of the congregation.

The event has deeply impacted the state. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear urged people to pray for the families involved and praised the fast action by both local police and state troopers.

State Attorney General Russell Coleman also shared his thoughts, saying, “Today, violence invaded the Lord’s House.” He added that his office would help local officials with the investigation.

Police Continue to Investigate

The motive behind the attack remains unclear. However, the police confirmed that the suspect had an upcoming court hearing related to domestic violence. Investigators are looking into whether this played a role in the church shooting.

Church leaders and community members are in shock as they try to process the loss and support each other during this difficult time.
