Tristan Rogers, best known for portraying super spy Robert Scorpio on General Hospital, has died at the age of 79. The actor passed away on Friday, less than a month after making a special appearance on the long-running soap opera.

Frank Valentini, executive producer of General Hospital, shared the show’s grief in a statement. “The entire General Hospital family is heartbroken to hear of Tristan Rogers’ passing,” he said. “Tristan captivated fans for 45 years, and Port Charles will never be the same without him — or Robert Scorpio.”

From Rock Drums to Soap Stardom

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Rogers’ first passion was music. In his early twenties, he played drums in a rock band with friends. When the band failed to find success, he turned to commercials and modeling before deciding to pursue acting.

Rogers gained small roles in Australia before moving to Los Angeles in hopes of a Hollywood breakthrough. His strong Australian accent initially proved to be a barrier with casting directors, but persistence paid off when he was cast in a brief role on General Hospital in 1980.

Robert Scorpio Comes to Life

What began as a two-day role quickly became legendary. Rogers was originally hired to fight the show’s hero, Luke Spencer, and then exit. However, then-executive producer Gloria Monty spotted his potential. With no character written for him, she asked him to appear in background scenes “looking suspicious” until a storyline developed.

Soon after, Rogers was introduced as spy “CK8,” a character later given the name Robert Scorpio. Scorpio’s sharp wit and daring missions made him a central figure in Port Charles for decades.

Beloved Storylines and Lasting Impact

Rogers’ character became known for his complex romances. His on-again, off-again relationship with Holly Sutton, played by Emma Samms, was among the show’s most popular storylines. Scorpio also shared a dramatic history with fellow spy Anna Devane, portrayed by Finola Hughes. Together they had a daughter, Robin, played by Kimberly McCullough.

In 2024, Rogers and Samms departed the show together in scenes inspired by Casablanca. He returned briefly this July, when it was revealed his character was battling lung cancer. That appearance marked his final return to the soap that defined much of his career.

Beyond Port Charles

While General Hospital made him a household name, Rogers also appeared in other soap operas, including The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless. He also starred in Studio City, a role that won him a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Digital Drama Series.

Remembering a Legacy

Over four decades, Rogers left an indelible mark on daytime television. His portrayal of Robert Scorpio became one of soap opera’s most enduring characters, loved by fans around the world.

Tristan Rogers is survived by his wife, Teresa Parkerson, as well as a daughter and a son. His passing leaves behind a legacy of resilience, creativity, and a character whose adventures will remain part of soap opera history.
