Canada, the United Kingdom, and France have jointly warned Israel of concrete consequences over its ongoing military escalation in Gaza and the West Bank. In a sharply worded statement, the three nations condemned the Israeli government's recent actions and hinted at the possibility of imposing targeted sanctions.

Israel Faces Global Pushback Over Military Campaign

The joint statement came after Israel announced a new military offensive and a minimal increase in food aid to Gaza. Canada, the UK, and France labeled the aid provision as "wholly inadequate" and described the humanitarian situation as "intolerable." “We will not stand by,” the three prime ministers declared, urging Israel to halt its military operations and lift restrictions on humanitarian aid. They stressed that if Israel fails to act, further measures—including sanctions—will follow.

Acknowledging Terror, Condemning Disproportionate Response

The trio of countries reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself and condemned the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, calling it “heinous.” However, they criticized the scale of Israel's response as excessive. They also demanded that Hamas release all remaining hostages.

Israel Blames Hamas for Collapse of Ceasefire Talks

Eden Bar Tal, Israel’s Foreign Ministry Director General, stated that Israel had accepted a ceasefire proposal from U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff. However, he claimed Hamas rejected the offer, leaving Israel with “no choice” but to resume military action. Over the weekend, Israel launched fresh air and ground assaults across Gaza. The military also ordered evacuations in Khan Younis, Gaza’s second-largest city. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated Israel intends to "take control of all of Gaza" and promote what he called "voluntary emigration"—a notion widely rejected by Palestinians.

International Condemnation of Settlement Expansion

Canada, the UK, and France also slammed recent Israeli plans to expand settlements in the West Bank. They condemned inflammatory language from Israeli officials, warning it could incite further displacement of Palestinians. “Settlement expansion is illegal,” the statement read. “It erodes the prospect of a viable Palestinian state and threatens the safety of both sides.” The leaders again emphasized they are prepared to take further action, including targeted sanctions, to deter such moves.

Limited Aid Reaches Gaza Amid Warnings of Famine

On the same day the statement was released, five trucks carrying baby food and essential supplies entered Gaza. The UN called it a “welcome development” but stressed it was far from enough. Experts have sounded the alarm on a looming famine after more than two months of blocked aid. Israeli officials acknowledged that international pressure contributed to the decision to allow limited food deliveries.

Broader International Support for Humanitarian Access

In a separate joint statement, foreign ministers from 22 countries—including Germany, Japan, Ireland, and Sweden—called for immediate restoration of aid to Gaza. They urged Israel to allow humanitarian organizations, including the UN, to work freely and independently. The group also voiced opposition to a new aid distribution plan by Israel and the U.S., which sidelines traditional UN-led operations. They warned this shift would compromise humanitarian neutrality by linking aid to military and political goals.

Canada’s Foreign Minister Urges Ceasefire

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand posted on social media calling for an immediate ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid. While she did not directly mention Israel, her statement emphasized the need for a two-state solution and insisted Hamas must disarm and release hostages.

Jewish Advocacy Group Criticizes Canada’s Position

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) pushed back against the joint statement. Interim president Noah Shack argued it contradicted earlier remarks made by Canadian officials in Rome, where they supported excluding Hamas from Gaza’s future governance. Shack warned that the new statement might embolden Hamas to resist negotiations and peace efforts.

A Growing Rift in International Policy

The international reaction marks a significant shift in tone from key allies of Israel. While still recognizing Israel’s security concerns, countries like Canada, the UK, and France are making it clear: continued military escalation and humanitarian restrictions will come with consequences. The growing chorus of voices calling for restraint and aid access signals mounting frustration—and a potential turning point in diplomatic pressure on Israel.
