An Israeli military raid in the occupied West Bank city of Nablus left one Palestinian man dead and four others seriously wounded on Sunday, intensifying concerns over rising violence in the region.
Civilian Area Turns Into Flashpoint
According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, five people were hit by gunfire during the operation. Nayef Firas Ziad Samaro, 26, was killed, while a 12-year-old was among those injured, suffering a gunshot wound to the shoulder.
Witnesses said the raid unfolded in a crowded area just as schools were letting out, increasing the risk to civilians.
Tragedy at the Hospital
In a heartbreaking development, Samaro’s body was taken to the same hospital where his wife was in labor. Palestinian authorities said she was informed of his death while preparing to give birth.
Israeli Military Response
The Israeli military said its forces responded after individuals in the area threw rocks at soldiers. In a statement, the army said troops opened fire during the confrontation and “several hits were identified,” referring to those shot.
Rising Tensions in the West Bank
The incident adds to growing concerns over escalating violence across the West Bank. Palestinian officials, human rights groups, and international observers have warned of a steady increase in deadly incidents involving young Palestinian men.
The United Nations humanitarian office reports that at least 42 Palestinians have been killed since the beginning of the year. Armed settlers were responsible for at least 11 of those deaths.
A Region on Edge
The latest raid underscores the fragile security situation in the West Bank, where clashes, settler violence, and military operations continue to fuel instability and fear among civilians.
