Alain Delon, the celebrated French actor known for his roles as both villains and heroes, has died at the age of 88, according to French media reports. Delon, who captivated audiences with his striking looks and complex portrayals, left a significant mark on cinema as one of France's most iconic stars.

Born on November 8, 1935, in Sceaux, France, Delon's early life was shaped by his parents' separation and his subsequent placement with a foster family. He attended a Catholic boarding school before joining the navy at 17, serving in Indochina. Upon returning to France in 1956, Delon worked various jobs before pursuing an acting career.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Delon became a sought-after actor, collaborating with renowned directors like Luchino Visconti and Joseph Losey. His performances in films such as "Plein Soleil" (1960) and "Rocco and His Brothers" (1961) earned him critical acclaim. "The Leopard" (1963), also directed by Visconti, won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, cementing his status as a leading man.

Throughout his career, Delon balanced acting with producing, working on 26 films by 1990. Despite his disillusionment with the industry later in life, he continued to act in TV movies and appeared on stage. His career was marked by both admiration and controversy, including remarks on various social issues that led to mixed reactions.

Delon’s presence extended beyond film. He briefly presided over the Miss France jury and continued to influence the industry until his final years. The Cannes Film Festival expressed sadness over his passing, noting his impact on French cinema. The Brigitte Bardot Foundation and French film producer Alain Terzian also paid tribute, highlighting Delon's contributions to both the arts and animal protection.

Delon is survived by his children, including Anthony, Anouchka, and Alain-Fabien, as well as his involvement in various personal and professional ventures. Despite his retirement from acting in 1999, Delon remained active in the industry, leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable performances and a career that spanned decades.
