Statistics Canada is still looking to hire workers for the upcoming 2026 Census, which begins collecting data from households this week. With more than 30,000 positions to fill, the agency is actively recruiting across the country, especially in areas where there are still gaps in staffing.
The Importance of the Census
Every five years, Statistics Canada conducts the Census of Population to gather vital demographic, social, and economic information. This data is essential for planning services like employment, education, transportation, and healthcare, helping governments make informed decisions to serve the public better.
Geoff Bowlby, assistant chief statistician at Statistics Canada, highlighted in an interview with CTVNews.ca that the census is a large-scale effort, and many positions are still open. "The census is a huge endeavour," he said, emphasizing the ongoing need for workers to ensure the smooth operation of the project.
Available Positions
Statistics Canada is primarily looking for enumerators, who are non-supervisory staff tasked with visiting households to collect completed census questionnaires. Enumerators are expected to work at least 20 hours per week, primarily during evenings and weekends. These positions are temporary but crucial for gathering accurate data across the country.
In addition to enumerators, the agency is seeking crew leaders to manage teams of enumerators and assistants. Crew leaders are responsible for overseeing the collection of census data and must work full-time, typically 40 hours per week, including days, evenings, and weekends.
Pay and Benefits
Census workers are compensated based on their roles. Enumerators are paid $25.87 per hour, while crew leaders receive $31.32 per hour. Staff can also claim additional expenses such as mileage and parking when applicable, ensuring that their out-of-pocket costs are covered while performing their duties.
Duration of Employment
The duration of census work typically runs from May to July, but this can vary depending on the position and location. It’s a temporary job with flexible hours, making it an excellent opportunity for many Canadians looking for seasonal or part-time work.
Eligibility Requirements
To apply for a census job, candidates must be at least 18 years old in most provinces and territories, except for a few regions where the minimum age is 19. Applicants must also be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or hold valid work permits. Additionally, they need to reside in Canada and have a Canadian home address.
How to Apply
For those interested in applying, more information on the available positions and the application process can be found on the Statistics Canada website.
