A hospital in Carman, Manitoba, has been forced to cancel multiple surgeries due to an ongoing ant infestation. The Southern Health authority confirmed that 16 elective surgeries, including hernia repairs and gallbladder removals, were postponed. These cancellations, which have affected patients and hospital staff, were made for safety and hygiene reasons.

The Southern Health authority, responsible for overseeing health care at Carman Memorial Hospital, has taken swift action to resolve the issue. While the affected surgeries are being transferred to another facility, an exterminator has been brought in to eliminate the pests and prevent further disruptions.

Previous Ant Problems at the Hospital

This is not the first time the hospital has faced an ant problem. The issue first arose in August 2024 when ants were spotted in the facility. However, the infestation subsided within a few weeks. Last summer, the ants returned, prompting the region to take action to address the issue. Despite these efforts, the ants have resurfaced with the change of season, and the hospital now faces the need for more extensive measures to deal with the pests long-term.

Southern Health emphasized that the situation is being addressed as quickly as possible to minimize the disruption to hospital services. The authority is working closely with an exterminator to resolve the problem and ensure that the hospital can continue to provide care without further interruptions.

Minister’s Response and Union Concerns

Manitoba’s Health Minister, Uzoma Asagwara, acknowledged the situation, stating that every effort is being made to restore normal services at the hospital. "Every effort is being made to minimize disruptions and restore normal services as soon as possible," she said.

However, the Manitoba Nurses Union has raised concerns about the ongoing pest problem. The union, representing health care workers at the hospital, stated that the issue has been a long-standing concern and that it negatively affects the work environment. Nurses have reported that dealing with the pest problem has made it difficult to maintain a pleasant and safe workplace.

Hospital Efforts to Resolve the Issue

The hospital continues to take steps to address the infestation and improve the working conditions for staff and the safety of patients. The focus remains on finding a long-term solution that will prevent future disruptions and ensure that the hospital can resume its full range of services without the threat of pests.
